Sunday 14th December Bedlington Blue Plaque Walk
Start Point & Car Parking: Attlee Park Car Park on east side of Bedlington NE22 5AB
Distance: 5 or 6 miles
Leaders: Alison Waters
Grade: Easy overall but woodland paths could be muddy, undulating with loose stones and possible tree roots.
How to get there: Attlee Park is on the A193 which connects Blyth to Bedlington.
Walk Description: Bedlington played a pivotal role in the Industrial Revolution and is especially rich in railway history. Some of the town centre buildings form a Conservation Area which we will explore.
We will walk along the River Blyth through Humford Woods. Once we approach the town centre after some countryside walking, the Blue Plaque Trail will take us along Front St and back down to the car park.
Sunday 7th December Powburn/ Beanley Circular
Start Point: Private car park immediately right after the Plough Inn before crossing the bridge in Powburn village. Although there are signs suggesting the car park is private, special dispensation has been obtained from the owner so our being there will be allowed on the day.
Grade: Moderate for distance. For those who find walks over 6 miles too much then this is not for you.
Walk leader: George Sainthouse
W3W: polka.referral.profiled
How to get there: Powburn is on the A697 and is easily accessible from all parts of Northumberland.
This is a reasonably simple walk described as moderate for its 8.5 mile distance. It is a circular walk taking in former railway routes, along farm roads and forest trails. The walk undulates and gentle hills (not mountains) will add interest!
Enjoy!
Sunday 2nd November Warkworth to St Cuthbert’s Cross, Alnmouth
Start Point & Car Parking: Car Park at Warkworth NE65 0XS (not beach car park)
Distance: 6 miles
Leader: Pat Coombs
Grade: Easy
How to get there: Follow the A1068 from the South to the North end of Warkworth. Cross the bridge over the river Coquet and turn immediately right and drive uphill. The car park is on the left and indicated by a small blue cycle path sign.
Walk Description: From the car park head north and pick up the coastal path towards Alnmouth. After 1 km the path heads right towards the coast. Here is a little outcrop known as Birling Carrs. We head onto the dunes and head towards Alnmouth. Leaving the dunes we see a ruined farm building, we follow the path straight forward and follow the track leading up to Church Hill. Following this path we reach Mortuary Chapel, built around 1870. The path takes us around the chapel to the top of the hill – finding St Cuthbert’s Cross. Heading down the hill onto the beach and following the estuary towards the sea
Following the beach we head south back to Birling Carrs once again – hopefully the tide hasn’t come in (can everyone swim – tee hee) If the tide is in we can follow the path up towards the caravan site and back onto the coastal route before coming back down onto the beach. Walking back along the beach passing the anti-tank blocks until we see the life ring. We exit the beach here and follow the path back to the car park. We could possibly stop for lunch at the top of the hill at St Cuthberts Cross, taking in the spectacular views.

Yes you can use the Seahouses Social Club car park on this instance, but please display a notice that they are part of the NRWS group and this will avoid us chasing after you!! We do not serve coffees, but we would be obliged in return for free parking if your fellow walkers could buy a soft drink or whatever before they leave! We do have a christening that day park as sensibly as possible to maximise space for the christening.
Walk Details:The first section is a walk along the track of the single gauge branch line of the North Sunderland Railway. We then use field paths, cycle tracks and the coastal path to reach Bamburgh Castle. We will return to Seahouses following the coast.

Sunday 20th July – Druridge Bay and Widdrington
Start Point: Meet at the beach car park NE61 5EG
Time: 11am – please note later start time.
Distance: A few miles
Walk Leaders: Jacqueline Armstrong and Pat Coombs
Grade: Moderate

Park as near the entrance as you can and we'll meet near the entrance where there is a good path down to the beach.
The Walk:As the weather forecast for Bardon Mill is looking a bit dodgy, especially for a picnic, Jacqueline has suggested that we postpone this particular walk as it's a long way to go for a picnic in bad weather. We have decided to change it to Widdrington so that we can eat at the WI Hall if it is rainy, if not, we'll have it on the beach. This walk is therefore suitable for everyone! You'll probably all know that there is usually a little stream running down to the sea, so you may wish to wear suitable boots for that!

The Walk: Holystone is a beautiful stone-built village dating from the 12th century when Augustinian Canonesses (nuns) built a priory. We will visit the Lady’s Well which is a medieval baptismal site. The forest area suffered a massive amount of damage by Storm Arwen in Nov 2021. We will be walking on woodland paths and gravelled forest tracks. Poles are advised as a lot of rough ground to navigate. The cleared areas of forest whilst a bit forlorn, do open the area up to beautiful views. The route is undulating with the occasional short but steep section.

We will cross over the footbridge and turn left heading in the direction of Thropton, very soon climbing away from the road heading into the hills. The walking is on well-trodden footpaths but the elevation of up to 1000 feet at its maximum, makes this mid-way between easy/moderate. There is a choice at the midway point to either climb to the cairns at Cartington Hill (1000 ft.), or to omit this where the elevation will be around 500ft.
Lunch will be taken either at the cairns or at the foot of the climb!! The walk continues still along easy well-worn paths, now largely downhill, with views of Cragside House in the near distance. It is hoped that Cartington Hill will be climbed as the view from the cairns is well worth the effort involved.

This Grade II* listed nineteenth century building, based on an ancient (fourteenth century) Pele tower, is cared for by The Historic Chapels Trust. We hope to be able to be able to obtain access to the building; but in any case, the views from this vantage point nestled under the Cheviots make this a worthwhile visit. We then return on an alternative route across farm tracks and lanes to our starting point at Netherton Village Hall. How to get there:
Train: There is no rail service from Newcastle via Morpeth to Berwick on the day, it is a rail replacement bus from Newcastle taking approx 2hours to Berwick. There are some trains to Alnmouth with ongoing rail replacement bus to berwick which may be slightly quicker.
Bus: Check services with Arriva
Car: Parking – Castlegate long stay is free, no timecard necessary, 5-10 minute walk from the Railway Station
Proposed Programme:
Aim to visit 3 or 4 venues am, lunch, 3 or 4 venues pm
Morning
1. Through Coronation Park to the medieval Water Tower
2. 18C Ice House ( large underground structure; ice imported from Norway)
3. Coxon’s Tower/New Tower (underground medieval defences accessed via tunnels)
4. Main Guard (used in the days before police for keeping order in the town)
Lunch: folk may want to bring a packed lunch, lots of places to sit out. I can point out nearby eateries. The Granary has food and will be hosting a Lowry Exhibition.
Afternoon:
Border Brewery Cellars an 18C bonded warehouse – very atmospheric.
Gunpowder Magazine (built mid 18C after it was discovered that the sea air had made stored gunpowder unusable)
Cumberland Bastion (part of the 16C defences accessed via a tunnel)
Terrain – mainly tarmac, some steps and slopes. Ground inside some structures is uneven. Tunnels are dark so a small torch is useful.
The above schedule is not written in stone! I may have to chop and change around a bit to fit in with as yet unpublicised opening times. Heritage Open Days are volunteer led so timetabling is complicated and never complete until near the event.
Sunday 1st September: Prudhoe Castle – Wylam Waggonway
Start Time: 10am
Start Point: Tyne Riverside Country Park, Prudhoe (Toilets available)
Grid Ref: NZ 087 635
Postcode: NE42 6NP
Distance: 6 miles
Grade: Moderate
Leaders Roger and Margaret
Getting there. From the A69 either take the exit for Heddon-on-the –Wall B6528 and go to Horsley, or take the next exit for Wylam,Horsley,Ovingham. Then at the next crossroad turn right for Horsley. After the village do not follow the road bending right to Harlow Hill but go straight on past the sign for High Barns and take the next left for Ovingham. This is just before the slip road back onto the A69. Go down this lane to Ovingham and at the bottom turn right. You immediately have a sharp left at the church and before the road turns right you need to go left to get onto Ovingham bridge. There is sometimes a bit of a queue as the bridge is single track. Once over the bridge turn immediately right at brown sign for Tyne Riverside Country Park.
The Walk. From the Tyne Riverside Carpark, we follow the river mainly on tarmac shared path to Hagg Bridge, we cross the river and go along the Wylam Waggonway, again a shared path, as far as Stevenson’s cottage This is our turn around point. We backtrack and go over the bridge again, then a little road walking until we can get onto the footpath back to the castle. This path is quite up and down and at the time of the recce was pretty muddy. There are nice woods on one side and industrial stuff on the other. Prudhoe Castle is an English Heritage site so if you want to go in and are not members there is a charge. From the castle it is only a 10-minute walk back down to the car park.
