Conveying an idea through speech, whether to convince, entertain, express an opinion, etc., is an important skill. Our children need to learn to communicate clearly and unashamedly in today's society. Proper communication can make a big difference in getting a job, making a friend, sharing Christ, accepting an honor, approaching a government leader, etc. Learning and using these skills now will make for better communicators in the future!
If you are interested in helping your children (families and/or co-ops) develop quality speech skills and would like a good starting point, I'd like to help. The homeschool community in Minnesota offers speech competitions to help sharpen these skills, with qualifiers competing at the regional and national level. What an exciting time to get involved!
Class Descriptions
(Class schedules can be modified for individual co-ops)
First Year Class
For students ages 13-18. Students learn the importance of good speaking skills, how to deal with fears of speaking, various types of speeches, and finding, writing, and preparing good material. Students will practice using their voices well, proper breathing techniques, eye contact, facial expression, gestures and body movement, critiquing skills, and learning about a variety of speakers who have made a significant impact through the use of their words. Class is opened with prayer, and Scripture is often used. This class typically runs 20 one-hour sessions.
Advanced Class
The Advanced Class is for serious students who want to continue their speech skills in a way that deals with everyday life opportunities. General speaking skills are reviewed before students present a variety of speeches for class. These may include forms of impromptu, interpretive, speaking the truth in love (leaning toward apologetics), after dinner speaking, devotionals, and interview skills. Students are encouraged to use a lot of creativity to prepare for these speeches. They are expected to take turns opening class with a short Scripture reading and prayer. This class typically runs 20 one-hour sessions.
Classes are taught using Scripture and represent a biblical worldview!
