New Rules Changes for 2024

Check out the New Rules Changes for 2024For the upcoming season you will find a change in game time with a move to quarters instead of halves.  Also note changes to the improve the flow of the game regarding free positions and self starts.

Sub Varsity Quarters

This is from the NHIAA Girls Lacrosse Policy and Procedures manual, p. 4:

(Special Points of Emphasis, continued) MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATION

Girls varsity and sub varsity lacrosse will have four twelve minute quarters.

During back to back games :

The varsity game will consist of four (4) twelve minute quarters

The sub varsity game will consist of four (4) ten minute quarters. Upon mutual agreement the sub-varsity quarters may be reduced to a minimum of five (5) minutes each with a five (5) minutes intermission.

A full sub-varsity rate shall be paid regardless of length of game time.

If the JV coaches want to have running 12 minute quarters on back to back games, all should be in agreement with this.

You Make the Call Videos

A great way to start preparing for the season is by watching game videos.  As you watch the videos, think about your positioning and the mechanics you would use if you were making the call.  And what call would you make?  Click HERE to watch some of these videos from US Lacrosse.  These videos are from 2023 game play, so be sure to consider if any of these calls would change due to the new rule updates.

May 2023 - Some reminders from Libby

Nice to be out on the field again.  Teams are getting into the swing of things, just as we are.

Here are some reminders so far.

Some of you still do not have your test scores to me.  You know who you are.  Please get those to me ASAP!!!!! Please be a member in good standing!!

Goalkeeper Equipment

page 17 Sec. 6 Art 1

The goalkeeper must wear a helmet with face mask and properly secured chinstrap, a separate throat protector, padded gloves, a mouthpiece, a chest protector and padding on the thighs.

(This is just a portion of the full description...pointing out the padding on the thighs).

Mouthguards

Page 19 ART.1

All players must properly wear a professionally manufactured intra-oral mouthpiece that fully covers the teeth.  The mouthpiece shall be of any readily visible color other than clear or white and must not have graphics of white teeth.

Eye black

Page 19 ART.6

Eye black worn on the face must be one solid stroke with no logos/numbers/letters and shall not extend further than the width of the eye socket or below the cheekbone.

Time-outs

Page 30. Article 4-3 Art 1 "Each team shall be permitted two time-outs during regulation game that do not carry over into overtime. Each time is permitted one time-out during the entire duration of overtime.

Overtime

Page 31, Sect 6

When the score is tied at the end of regular playing time and overtime is to be played, both teams will have a five-minute rest and toss a coin (visiting captain calls) for choice of ends. The alternate possession shall continue from regulation. The game will be restarted by a center draw. The winner will be decided by "sudden-victory."   The team scoring the first goal wins the game. Each overtime period shall be two three-minute halves. The clock stops on official time-outs or fouls in the critical scoring area. After the first half of the overtime period, teams shall change ends with no delay for coaching. The game will be restarted by a center draw.  If the teams are still tied after six minutes have elapsed, the teams will have a three-minute rest and change ends.  Play will continue with "sudden victory" until a winning goal is scored.

Body Ball

Page 53 Section 1 a.

Allow any part of a player's body to deliberately impede, accelerate or change the direction of the ball.  Players may kick the ball on a non-shooting attempt.  However, if the goalkeeper blatantly attempts to stop a shot on goal by playing the ball off the body while outside the goal circle, it shall be called a Major Foul.

Note:

Players cannot move in front of a bouncing ball and stop it like a "soccer ball stop".

Reminders:

Carding- As umpires, make sure you record cards.  Place a piece of tape on your card and write down the #of player and time.  One umpire goes to the table and states clearly: Jersey Color, Player Number, time on clock and time card is released.  On the fourth Card, state team plays short remainder of the game and tell the coach. Any additional cards team play's down another player and so on.  So yes a team can be playing with one, two, three players down in a game.

Slash

Check to the Head

Dangerous Follow Through

Dangerous Propelling

Dangerous Contact-any action that thrusts or shoves a player with or without the ball who is in a defenseless position. This includes but is not limited to: head down, from out of the visual field, in the air, or out of balance, especially in the kidneys, ribs, lower back, and shoulder blades, or aimed at the neck or head.

Injury Time out

Page 29 ART.3.

Time out be taken due to player injury or suspected injury.  Whether or not medical personnel or a coach comes onto the field to attend to a player, that player must leave the field. A substitute must take the injured player's place.

a. No one from the sideline may come onto the field without the permission of the official.

b. Coaching is prohibited.

c. If a FP is to be taken and the team has no sub, the official may move the nearest player to assume the position of the player who left the field.

d. If an injured player is a goalkeeper and the team has no other “dressed” keeper, the goalkeeper may remain.

e. Substitution not to exceed 30 secs (Use common sense).

f. No stick checks will be permitted during this stoppage of play.

Clock Management: page 29

Time is out taken for:  illness, accident/injury, issuance of a card, to check a stick, offsides, inadvertent whistle, AP, anytime the draw must be retaken, and when there is a foul in the CSA during the last two minutes of each half (unless there is a 10-goal differential).

No self starts when the clock is stopped!

If possible, have the timer announce 2 mins remaining in half.  The clock stops only on fouls in the CSA (so no self-starts by the defense in CSA unless there is a 10-goal differential).

Team Work:

When working together, treat each other with respect and professionalism.  Voice and tone, and mannerism is also part of how one addresses each other. Questions will arise and it is important to a)listen, b) evaluate, c)adjust.  The bottom line is everyone wants to do a good job, be consistent with each other's calls, and get the ruling correct.  This brings us to another important factor of consistency throughout the state.

Some games will be fast, quick and highly skilled but rules are rules and should be enforced the same.

Please let me know if you have questions.

Appreciate your hard work to keep the games safe and fair.
