The Innovations, or Conceptual Shifts, of the NGSS begin to describe how teaching and learning will look with the implementation of the Next Generation Science Standards. In future professional learning modules we will build on these shifts as we look at the anatomy and architecture of a performance expectation, describe how the shifts look when put into practice in the classroom, consider formative and summative assessments, and begin planning instruction around the NGSS.
Let's go back to the learning intentions (what you should know and understand) and success criteria (how you will know you achieved the learning intentions) for this module.
The learning intentions for this module:
Understand the vision, goal, and principles of the Framework that guided the development of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS).
Describe the Conceptual Shifts (or Innovations) of the NGSS and discuss their implications on teaching and learning.
Identify NGSS resources for further study and information.
The success criteria for this module are:
I have read about the Conceptual Shifts (Innovations) of the NGSS and reflected on the implications for teaching and learning.
I have participated in this learning module by responding to the surveys an reading the responses of others.
I have access to NGSS resources identified in this module to further my learning.
Has this module accomplished the learning intentions identified above? Did you meet the success criteria outlined above? It is easy when doing personal professional learning to skim text, skip answering questions, and not participate in the surveys. By doing so you minimize your learning.
But consider this, the NGSS will change how you teach and how students learn for many years. The previous standards were around for almost 15 years. Now is the time to deepen our understanding of the NGSS before the pressures of implementation and high stakes testing come.
Your final task in this module is to complete a very short reflection and evaluation. Click on the right arrow below to complete the survey.
