Congratulations!
Your student has signed up to take the IB exam(s) in one or more subjects. There is lots of research that shows students who take IB courses do much better in college than students who do not take advanced courses. Most of our students do well enough on their exams to earn college credit, which saves the students money and time in college.
Here is some information to ensure that each student gets the most out of this experience.
When and where are the IB exams?
The exams take place between May 2nd and May 16th. The schedule for each subject exam is posted on this website https://sites.google.com/site/newportcubsib/ib-exams . Most subjects are tested over two days, an afternoon exam followed by a morning exam session. Exams locations vary, please see the schedule on the link above.
Exam costs and payments.
The IB exams might seem expensive, but they really are a good deal for students who earn college credit with their exam scores. The registration fee is $172 and per exams fee is $93. For students taking several exams this does add up. We offer scholarship assistant to any family that needs help paying for the exams. Families may also pay a bit each month if they cannot afford to pay it all at one time. If a student qualifies for fee reduction through the state of Oregon, then the exams are free.
What is encompassed with the IB assessments?
For each IB subject there are several aspects to the assessment. A student must complete some internal assessments and are also assessed with external assessments. In general, external assessments are about 80% of the IB grade. Internal assessments are scored by our teachers and samples are sent to IB to be rescored (or moderated). This ensures teachers around the world score in similar ways. External assessments are scored by IB examiners who are also moderated.
The internal assessments vary by course.
External assessments are in the form of multiple choice and essay exams written by IB and given in May except for IB theater and art where students complete additional work due in April.
