THE ACROPOLIS MUSEUM

The excavations below the not-so-new-anymore Acropolis Museum have recently been opened to the public. The archaeological site which can now be visited reveals totally new vistas on many periods of Athens’ past. Indeed, the presentation and preservation of the site set very high standards and well illustrate how a modern city and the material testimony to its past can co-exist. Human activities in the area can be dated back to the fourth millennium BC and they continued for millennia thereafter, with greater or lesser intensity depending on the period. We shall examine the houses, workshops, cisterns, toilet facilities and the like, all of which testify to a very vibrant neighbourhood in the shadow of the Acropolis. Of particular note is the large, and opulent, residence of the fifth century AD, a period which is all too often overlooked in general histories.

opolis Museum for the tour, and for lunch at the taverna “Spelia tis Akropoleos” (which is a five minute walk away at Thrasyllou 24) between 1:15 and 1:30 pm.
