5 Post War Flying

While there was little flying I am finding more about her life. In a 1945 letter home she writes about being a salesman in Denmark. Historical insight is she had not realized how fiercely the Danes had resisted the Germans during the occupation. Odd things like classifying a Ukrainian woman as German so the Russians would not take her. And more about post war shortages. The Danes had meat and fish. She is not allowed to send things back home to England. England had even more shortages that the Continent. One item she sold were combs. Combs were in short supply after the war! She mentions her desire to move to the US for the weather.

Then there is a bit about "Trade Expeditions" where she is given a camera and sent to South America. I hope to trip over more of this in the future. I don't think she went, but I have the Argus camera they gave her. Some of the papers are marked "Secret."

pg 156: As an American I was not aware of the differences between post war England and the US. Where the US profited form the war, England owed the US great sums of money. Then they had trouble borrowing from the US to pay back the US. The Marshall Plan didn't start until summer of 1947. Adlington had promised a "New Jerusalem" but rationing created war time type rationing. (See movie Passport to Pimlico.) 1947 saw the worst winter since 1929 and knowing Naomi, this must have been the last straw.
