A little bit of our history
In 1947 after Indian Independence the United Kingdom Citizens Association (UKCA) provided support for citizens of the United Kingdom living in India. Initially this was to give guidance and reassurance in times of emergency or disaster and then later it was to organize social activities and fundraising events as a means to support particular charities in Bombay. The UKCA was connected to the Deputy British High Commission in Bombay and was run by a committee that was mainly composed of local business men and the British Deputy High Commissioner. The British Women’s Association (BWA) also worked closely with the United Kingdom Citizens Association in their work to raise funds for charities in Bombay.
In 1975 the BWA changed its name to The Elizabethans. Longtime residents and lifetime members of Mumbai Connexions recall that the name change was initiated by then club member Catherine Courtney who also suggested the name. A report shows that Catherine had a gold medallion with Queen Elizabeth I on it and it was this that gave her the idea of the Elizabethans as a name.
The Elizabethans had a representative at the committee meetings of the United Kingdom Citizens Association (UKCA) who would give a report on Elizabethan activities. This committee's attendance appears to have ceased at the end of 1993 when the Elizabethans began to admit women with foreign passports to their membership.
By 2003 there had been a marked increase in members of different nationalities and The Elizabethans committee felt that The Elizabethans was no longer an appropriate name. The club members voted to change the name to Mumbai Connexions at The Elizabethans AGM in December 2003.
Mumbai Connexions still enjoys a special relationship with the British Deputy High Commission where the position of Honorary President of the Mumbai Connexions Executive Board is traditionally held by the partner of the British Deputy High Commissioner.
