qUALMS is currently inactive due to COVID, but we want to start meetings again soon. If you are interested in joining, please contact us.
qUALMS is Michigan State University’s official undergraduate organization for linguistics, registered in the fall semester of 2009.
qUALMS currently hosts two undergraduate linguistics conferences. In the spring of 2010, qUALMS hosted the first annual Michigan State Undergraduate Linguistics Conference (MSULC), a forum for undergraduate students at MSU to showcase their research in linguistics and related fields.
The following year, MSULC gave birth to its twin, the Great Lakes Expo for Experimental and Formal Undergraduate Linguistics. GLEEFUL is aimed at a wider audience: a linguistics conference to showcase research of international undergraduate research in linguistics. As of 2014, GLEEFUL has been extended to a second day featuring workshops aimed at developing research skills in various areas of linguistics.
Along with our two annual conferences, qUALMS hosts biweekly meetings for undergraduates to discuss linguistics, promote linguistics on campus, and of course, hang out and have fun! Recently, we've experimented with making some of these meetings into "help rooms" where students in linguistics courses can get help from fellow undergraduates.
