There are two competitions; Regional and State; please be ready for both
Competition Format
Unit Questions for this year's competition - Students will be answering one of the questions for their unit at the regional, and the other two at state. They have 4 minutes for a prepared answer, 6 for follow-up questions.
6 teams will be going to the state competition; here is how they will be determined at the regional competitions:
Region 1 is the Portland Metro area. Region 2 is the rest of the state.
Region 1 will have two divisions.
Division A is Lincoln, Lake Oswego, Parkrose Green, Parkrose White, and Central Catholic
Division B is Franklin, Grant, Madison, Wilson, and De La Salle (demonstration).
The top two team in each division will advance to state. And then the team from either division with the next highest score will also go.
Information about the competition from the national organization the Center for Civic Education
Franklin boosters are NOT allowed to watch the other teams compete.
Regional Competition
Wednesday January 9th, 2018
5:30PM-8:30PM
Lake Oswego High School
2501 Country Club Rd.
Lake Oswego, OR 97034
After going across the Ross Island Bridge, go south on OR-43 (SW Macadam) for 6.1 miles. Turn right on A Avenue, which will turn into Country Club Road. The high school will be on the right.
We have a carpool for students so that the students arrive no later than 4:45. Parents will want to be there by 5:35 to watch the first students compete. Judges will come to our assigned room to judge the students. They start PRECISELY at the time listed on the schedule. Once the judges start no one can come in or out of the classroom.
We will need lots of drinks and snacks for this date – as we will be out in Lake Oswego for 4 hours.
State Competition
Saturday January 26th, 2018
10:00AM-4:15PM
Mark Hatfield Federal Courthouse
1000 SW Third Ave.
Downtown Portland
Waiting in line. There will likely be a line to get into the courthouse. While everyone entering is coming for the same purpose, some individuals have been instructed to go to the front of the line; please allow them to do so. Judges and volunteers need to get in before you -- their orientation begins at 9:00. Students should go next; parents and supporters last.
Security check. You will go through a security check much like at the airport. Those 18+ will be asked to show a government-issued ID. Plan to put belts, shoes, etc, on the belt to go through the scanner. Leave items that stall the process (weapons, metal, extra stuff, etc.) at home. Cameras will be permitted. Avoid joking - the security guards have no sense of humor.
Watch your school only. Parents and supporters may watch their school only; they are not permitted to watch other schools. The same is true for students, teachers and coaches. Spectators not affiliated with competitors are free to watch all teams.
Judges do not know names. Judges are not told the names of the schools; schools are identified as colors. They are not provided with an official program until after they finish scoring.
The organizers have traditionally not accurately predicted how long it would take for them to add up scores and make the winning announcements. We may be waiting longer.
Attached at the bottom is the memo and schedule for the evening.
Overcrowding. We know that some rooms may become overcrowded. If your room is overcrowded, parents whose child is performing have priority seating. Please rotate seats among the parents and supporters accordingly. We ask that everyone in your hearing room be seated during all hearings. The timer will ask those standing to please take a seat or wait in the hall. There are no overflow rooms.
