In this activity, you will examine the effects that significant environmental events such as tsunamis, hurricanes, and drought can have on human health. You will research and report on a significant environmental event of your choice.
Unfortunately, nature can be unpredictable and major environmental events such as hurricanes, droughts, and earthquakes threaten the health and survival of people in the affected area.
On December 26, 2004, one of the largest earthquakes every recorded, measuring over 9 on the Richter Scale, hit in the Indian Ocean approximately 160 km off the coast of Sumatra, Indonesia. The undersea earthquake triggered a series of tsunamis, which caused death and destruction in at least 12 countries, including Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, and Thailand.
A tsunami is a series of long, powerful traveling ocean waves, usually created by earthquakes occurring below or near the ocean floor. In the deep, open ocean, the powerful tsunami waves may only be a metre high, but the wave height builds as they approach shallow water and land. The tsunami waves that hit land on December 26, 2004 were reportedly up to 30 metres high.
Watch the following Video about What a Tsunami is
Thousands of people were killed when the waves hit land from drowning, being trapped in collapsing buildings or were swept out to sea by the waves. This tsunami was the worst for lives lost in history.
Over one million people were left homeless, and more than five million were left without basic services, such as clean water. Thousands of homes, businesses, and other personal property were destroyed.

THE EFFECTS ON HUMAN HEALTH OF A SIGNIFICANT ENVIRONMENTAL EVENT
You have learned about the impact on human health of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. In this assignment, you will look at another significant environmental event and report on the impact on human health that the event had.
To communicate you will create a news report on your event and will include:
A description of the event including who, what, where, when, and how.
An explanation of the short-term and long-term health effects of the event, including statistics of number of deaths, injuries, and homeless.
A summary of any actions authorities have taken to prevent a similar event from occurring or actions taken to minimize the impact on human health if another, similar event takes place.
The environmental event you choose is up to you but here are a few ideas to get you started:
Hurricane Dorian
Montecito Mudslides
Hurricane Maria
Fort McMurray Wildfires
Joplin Tornado
2013 Southern Alberta Flood
Australian Wildfires
