Part I Research and understand Chinese New Year and its culture
The following questions will guide you to go through the research and help you better understand the traditions and customs of Chinese New Year.
1)According to the Chinese Lunar calendar, what date is this year's Chinese New Year?
2) What animal does represent this year? Which animal represents the year in which you were born? (Find the year you were born and look across to see which animal represents your year.)
3) What is the 15th day of the New Year called?
4)What are three things that Chinese people use to decorate their living rooms during Chinese New Year?
5)What do oranges and tangerines, traditionally served during this holiday, represent?
6)What are some of the things that people do before the holiday starts?
7)Name three "don'ts" on New Year's Day.
Please answer these questions after the presentation and turn the hard copy in. (This is an individual work)
Part II Make a booklet of Chinese New Year (be creative!)
Each person from the group has to do some part of this booklet.
The following should be included in your booklet.
1) Front page design by your group with your names and subject name.
2) Include red packet (or envelope) and spring couplets in your booklet.
Write out the names of red packet and spring couplet in Chinese Characters.
3) Include the abstract of folk story of 年(nian).
4) Cover all four aspects you have chosen for Chinese New Year.
5) The booklet has to be at least 8 pages as total.
Part III Demonstrate your understanding of Chinese New Year by power point presentation
Power point presentation will be presented by your group. please include some Chinese language for each slide, and
and you need to present some parts of your PPT in Chinese language this year's Chinese New Year Date,
the animal name of this year, food name etc. . You will choose sub topics from the following for this project.
1) Chinese Lunar calendar 中國農曆(农历)-- tell us the date and how it related to Chinese Zodiac
2) 15 days celebration 十五天的慶祝(庆祝)--why they celebrate 15 days, what do people do during this period, what do they do for each day.
3) traditional food 傳統(传统)食品-- what are the traditional food people eat, name them in Chinese , how these food related to Chinese New Year
4) traditional decoration 傳統裝飾(传统装饰)--how people decorate their house , what is the implied meaning
5) lantern festival 元宵節 (元宵节)--when people celebrate it, and how ? what food people eat for it? what is the meaning of this festival? how it is related to Chinese New Year?
6) differences between Chinese New Year and Christmas Celebration-- on several ways, compare them
7) red packet( or envelope)紅包(红包)-- what is inside it? meaning ? who gives whom? show us real examples
8) spring couplet 春聯(联)-- implied meaning? list some phrases in Chinese . explain the meaning in English. and bring 2 samples to class.
9) folk story of 年(nian) 年的民间故事-- tell us the legend and how it relate to Chinese New Year
Remember : if you present your PPT in Chinese as well as oral presentation 50%, you will get 15 extra points.
Part IV Make a short video clip which is less than 5 minutes in Chinese(put the video link in your PPT).
You need to make a video clip on any aspect related to Chinese New Year, such as food, customs,
clothing, celebration, etc. Please speak Chinese language in your video which should be the introduction about the content .
