There are a few ways to own your own instrument. Here are some thoughts...
1) Classified Ads/Pawn Shop
You can find instruments this way and they tend to be less expensive than buying from a music store. However, you run the risk of buying an instrument that might be damaged in some way that would make it worthless. Unless you are really familiar with the type of instrument you're buying I would not suggest this method. If you are experienced, or know someone who is experienced, then you can get some great deals. For example, I bought a used Yamaha student model trumpet that normally retails for $700 to $1,200 brand new for $75. The finish on the instrument wasn't as shiny as it was when it was new but everything worked and sounded great.
2) Buy Online
You can buy instruments online through sources like Musicians Friend and the Woodwind Brasswind company. Quite often you can get instruments cheaper than retail. You can also find used instruments through the internet as well.
3) Rent to Own
I have used this method to acquire instruments for myself through the years. I have rented to own through Marshall Music, Meyer Music, and West Michigan Band Instruments. All three stores rent most instruments that we use in Band Class. Marshall and Meyer Music are located on the south side of Grand Rapids and West Michigan Band Instruments is located on the Northeast side of Grand Rapids.
I am currently renting an Alto Sax for my daughter through West Michigan Band Instruments. This store is owned by a graduate of Creston HS from 1991 and has provided excellent service so far.
