1. Include a Grabber
Use one of the following, maybe two, but definitely not all:
ask a question
use suspense; don't announce your topic
use a startling statement
open with a quotation
begin with a STORY that has to do with your topic (can be funny, sad, serious...)
powerful statistic
real life example
2. Include an Audience Connector
- motivate the audience to CARE about your speech
(we, together, us, as a group)
3. Include your 3 main ideas
4. Include your topic (specific) in one to three sentences
5. Think SUSPENSE
-you could keep the audience waiting for/wondering what you are going to talk about-
Naming the topic AFTER you have hooked us makes us interested in the topic. If you had started right into the topic without steps one and two above, you risk getting yawns from the audience
6. Inform / Describe / Persuade / Entertain
7. Preview Step
8. Voice - can you hear your 'voice' in your speech. Are you speaking like you or are you trying to make it sound like someone else?
9. ENERGY - can you picture yourself saying what you want to say in your introduction with ENERGY?
What could be added to the intro? Watch any of the videos below to make it even better?
