Shared Reading: Throughout the year students will be read aloud to and learn to appreciate a variety of genres and unique writing styles.Shared reading is an integral part of a comprehensive literacy program. It is an instructional approach that can be used with a whole class or with a small group. During shared reading I explicitly teach proficient reading behaviours through modelling and think-alouds and begin to share with students the responsibility for reading.
Guided Reading: Activities following selected reading chosen by the teacher for the purpose of focusing on a specific skill. These activities may be done in groups, with a partner or individually.
Independent Reading: Time is allotted most school days for personal, uninterrupted, silent reading of materials selected from home, the classroom, school or public libraries.
Reading Online
Reading Workshop The Reading Workshop is a silent time when students are encouraged to read or write their thoughts about reading. Students are allowed to read books of their choice - either brought in from home or from a class/school/public library. We will be sharing monthly Book Reviews; in class, on our blog and Just Read It

Text Connections:
- Share a personal story that connects you to the text AND generates an interest in reading your book- (text to text, text to self, text to world, text to media)- Remember the Text Connection we did with Leo Lionni and his story ‘Swimmy’. This doesn’t have to be long, but be sure to include:• A connection• An example from book• Feelings (perceived feelings)• What you learnedMaking Connections
Remember:
- Favourite part of the book- Share an example of the book that made you think about your favourite part- Feelings that connect your example and the part of the book that made you think about your favourite part- Message of the book (What you learned)
