Between 9 and 3:30 is school time. During that time it is expected that students arrive on time and come prepared to work.
Most, if not all work should be completed during school hours. If students take advantage of school time and are responsible for their learning, there should be limited homework. Homework might be given, but as a tool to reinforce skills and concepts taught in class.
There will always be on-going assignments (POTW, Spelling Quizzes and reading for pleasure, are some examples).
The POTW (Problem of the Week) is given out during the week (will also be posted online, along with the Spelling Words and monthly book reviews) and expected to be handed in on the due date. This is work that will provide students with the necessary tools to critically analyze multi-step math problems.
Reading for pleasure is something that should be happening every night - read, read and read some more. Remember, have fun reading and if you are not enjoying what you are reading have the courage to abandon it and start something new.
Assignments that are being evaluated are mostly done in class, so that the various stages of thinking can be demonstrated. As well, assistance and clarification will be provided when needed. Ongoing descriptive feedback assists in our students' learning and gives them more opportunities to improve and succeed.
Once again, between 9 and 3:30 school behaviour is expected at school. This is the student's professional environment and they should act accordingly (as has been discussed in class and mentioned through our Class Agreements). However, once 3:30 rolls around, it is the student's time and they should be living their lives. Sometimes school may interfere, but usually students should be acting like children and enjoying their time with a hobby, sport, their family, or whatever they are passionate about. It could be school and homework and studying, but it doesn't have to be that way all the time.
If behaviour is appropriate in school and students are being responsible for their time in school then there shouldn't be much, if any, homework.
When there is homework, though, every student should have help organizing an appropriate place and time to complete their homework. Students who do not complete their homework will be asked to find time at school to finish the assigned work.
