Marketing 11 - Learn Marketing by building a Business.
Have you ever wondered why you choose one product over another? Why some brands seem to be everywhere, while others disappear? Why certain advertisements grab your attention—and others don't? Or how a business figures out what people actually want?
That's what we're going to explore in Marketing 11. But this isn't going to be a course where you simply memorize marketing terms and write tests. You're going to build a business.
Throughout the course, you'll learn the fundamentals of marketing and then use those skills to develop a business idea of your own. You'll research a market, figure out who your customers are, develop a product or service, create a brand, determine pricing, plan how you'll reach customers and develop an advertising campaign.
By the end of the course, you'll have created a marketing plan and business plan and presented your business in an investor-style pitch

We will do, as before, put our names and company name on our name tag
Speak with ONE other student at a time, not in a group. Your goal in 20 ish minutes is to have gone around to as many other students as possible.
So the script will be:

try to get around to everyone as best as possible, but ONE student ONE conversation at a time
When the stop watch ends the session return to your seat and complete PART II of the 'role play activity'

We'll look at the world of marketing from several different perspectives:
🔎 Understanding Marketing
Why do people buy? How do businesses create value? What makes a product or brand successful?
🎯 Understanding Customers
Who is your customer? What do they need? How do businesses use research to understand them?
💡 Building a Business
How do you turn a problem or opportunity into a product, service or business?
🎨 Creating a Brand
How do businesses create an identity that people recognize and remember?
📱 Marketing in the Digital Age
How are social media, influencers, data, artificial intelligence and e-commerce changing marketing?
📣 Promotion & Advertising
How do businesses get people's attention and convince them to take action?
🌎 Business in the Real World
We'll examine real businesses, advertisements and marketing decisions to understand what works, what doesn't and why.
Throughout the course, you'll take one business idea from a simple concept to a complete business proposal.
Your business could be almost anything:
A product • A service • An app • A clothing brand • A restaurant • A sports business • An online business • An event • A technology company
You don't need to arrive with a great business idea on the first day.
We'll develop it together.
As you learn new concepts, you'll add another piece to your business:
IDEA → RESEARCH → CUSTOMER → BRAND → MARKETING → ADVERTISING → BUSINESS PLAN → PITCH
This is a hands-on course.
You'll spend time:
Investigating real businesses
Researching customers and competitors
Developing ideas
Creating brands and advertisements
Using digital tools
Testing ideas
Receiving feedback
Improving your work
Presenting your ideas
The goal isn't simply to know what marketing is. The goal is to learn how to actually do marketing.
Marketing today looks very different from the marketing of even a few years ago.
During the course we'll explore questions such as:
How has social media changed advertising?
How do companies use data to understand customers?
How do influencers affect what we buy?
How is artificial intelligence changing marketing?
How much should companies know about their customers?
How can businesses market responsibly?
What will marketing look like in the future?
We'll consider not only what marketers can do, but also what marketers should do.
One of the most important things you will learn in this course has very little to do with advertising.
Business is about people.
Being able to introduce yourself, listen, ask good questions, understand what someone needs and build a relationship are incredibly valuable skills.
Technology can help us reach thousands of people, but successful businesses still depend on our ability to understand and connect with other people.
We'll explore those skills right from the beginning of the course.
Your first few weeks will give you the basic business and marketing toolkit you'll need for the rest of the course.
Then you'll begin developing your own business while at the same time learning essential marketing concepts.
By the end of Marketing 11, you should be able to look at almost any business and ask:
Who is their customer? What problem are they solving? Why does their product have value? How do they reach their customers?
Why does their advertising work? What makes their brand different?
And most importantly:
