Welcome to the course Digital Media 10 /11
It is so great to have all of you in the course! We have so much to explore, create, and learn together. By the end of this course, my hope is that you will have developed a comprehensive set of skills in new media and digital design. We will focus on developing your creative side, with plenty of opportunities for personal expression, while also building a strong technical foundation. Throughout the course, we will explore everything from Photoshop and graphic design to video editing, architectural renderings, advanced desktop publishing, and professional report creation. There is really no limit to what we can accomplish with digital media and design. My goal is for you to leave this course with not only a strong set of technical skills, but also the confidence and creativity to use those skills in your own projects and ideas.
I look forward to a really great semester! :)
Create a one Drive share link and create an 'on line' spreadsheet for sharing course assignments
Create and Share links in ONE drive - A 'how to' guide
Example - T Linburg - (using Google Sheets - but you could use your Microsoft version of Excel)
T Linburg - grade and assessment link spreadsheet (adjust the share permissions to allow Mr. Linburg to edit) telinburg@sd43.bc.ca
Hand In Folder for Digital Media 10 / 11
Alternate 'drag' and drop box -
Create a labelled folder and drop ALL assignments in this folder
If you can't make up links for the spreadsheet, then create a folder with your full name on it and drag and drop all your files into this ONE folder only!
Link to access 'creative cloud' and Adobe Suite at home
(please install - Adobe Photoshop / Adobe Illustrator / Adobe InDesign / Adobe Premiere)
We’re going to start our Digital Media course with Adobe Fresco, a powerful and approachable drawing and painting application. Our goal is not to become expert artists overnight — it is to develop our ability to create, experiment and communicate visually.
Adobe Fresco — Brush Mixing techniques
Your first challenge will be to creating two digital landscapes and environments using Fresco's brushes, colours and textures. There is an entire suite of brush tools that we can utilize in our compositions to add a high level of depth and nuance to our work.
We have, at our disposal, a quality set of digital drawing tablets to support our creative efforts.
We will explore:
Composition
Perspective
Colour and contrast
Tone and value
Texture and pattern
Atmosphere and depth
Realism vs. abstraction
You are encouraged to experiment. Your landscape could look realistic, stylized, surreal, futuristic or completely imaginary. The specific composition is really up to you.
Resources - Brushes and 'tips and techniques'
Pixel Brushes / 'Live' Brushes - ones that stay 'wet' after application like an oil paint / Ribbon Brushes / Landscape Fundamentals / Landscape Composition Tips
Create one finished digital landscape in Fresco.
Consider:
Foreground, middle ground and background
A clear focal point
Perspective and depth
Light and shadow
Colour and contrast
Texture
Your landscape can be realistic or highly stylized.

Extending - extra points: Create a second version using a completely different colour palette or visual style.
Explore the continuum between realism and abstraction:
2 Self Portrait
In the second of our introductory series, we will attempt to create a 'self portrait'. It could be completed with either the brush tools. You could colourize it or you could do it more in charcols and monochromatic (black and whites).
You could take a 'selfie' of yourself and use it to trace yourself or complete more of an 'interpretive' composition.
3 Cubist style portrait use if at least FIVE different geometric shapes
Realism to Abstract - where do your compositions fit into this continuum ?
Cubism - an early 20th century style
Working with Krita perspectives / Krita shape drawing
In the last of our intro series, we will be creating one or two 'scene's in which geometry figures prominently. You could take it from a more specific 'realism' all the way out to an abstract representation of a place or object.
Here is a step by step of the 'cubist' style
Experiment with different Fresco brushes and techniques. Try combining Pixel Brushes, Live Brushes and blending/mixing rather than relying on one brush throughout the entire composition.

How can you use light, colour, texture and brushwork to turn a flat drawing into something believable or dimensional?
