In STAT 135, first semester, we will be learning about displaying, interpreting, and describing univariate data, the additional rule, the multiplication rule, and conditional probability, normal distributions, z-scores and percentiles, sampling distributions, and an introduction to statistical inference.

Grading

  • 20% formative assessments, 80% summative assessments.
  • Formative assessments will take the form of classwork, homework, warmups, and exit slips.
  • Summative assessments will be quizzes, exams, and projects, in addition to some classwork and exit slips.

My Teaching Philosophy

  • Everyone can learn math. Wherever you are now in your understanding of mathematical concepts and skills, you can get better. My goal is to help you learn as much as you can over the course of this year.
  • In mathematics, as in life, it is important to take risks. If you never make a mistake, that means you aren't challenging yourself. There is no prize for finishing first, or saying "this is easy." That just means you aren't taking on a big enough challenge. It's nothing to be proud of.
  • This classroom will be an environment where everyone feels comfortable sharing their mathematical ideas, right or wrong. When someone makes a mistake, which will happen all the time, we all will use it as a starting point to learn.
  • Learning is active, not passive. In order to learn math, we need to be doing math. There will be some lecture and notes, but students will be doing most of the thinking.
  • The goal is learning, just completing work. The fun part of math is problem-solving, making connections, and figuring things out.

Classroom Rules and Expectations

  • No food in class. We have a rodent problem in this school, and we are serious about getting it under control. NO FOOD IN CLASS. Drinks such as water and black coffee are fine. Sugary drinks like coke or powerade are NOT acceptable. (Yes, the mice will come out and lick the carpet if there's sugar on it. Seriously. No sugary drinks!)
