CPM 1 is an integrated course. We will be learning about algebra, geometry, linear, quadratic and exponential relationships, how to solve equations.

Grading

  • 20% formative assessments, 80% summative assessments.
  • Formative assessments will take the form of classwork, homework, warmups, and exit slips.
  • Summative assessments will be quizzes, exams, and projects, in addition to some classwork and exit slips.

My Teaching Philosophy

  • Everyone can learn math. Wherever you are now in your understanding of mathematical concepts and skills, you can get better. My goal is to help you learn as much as you can over the course of this year.
  • In mathematics, as in life, it is important to take risks. If you never make a mistake, that means you aren't challenging yourself. There is no prize for finishing first, or saying "this is easy." That just means you aren't taking on a big enough challenge. It's nothing to be proud of.
  • This classroom will be an environment where everyone feels comfortable sharing their mathematical ideas, right or wrong. When someone makes a mistake, which will happen all the time, we all will use it as a starting point to learn.
  • Learning is active, not passive. In order to learn math, we need to be doing math. There will be some lecture and notes, but students will be doing most of the thinking.
  • The goal is learning, just completing work. The fun part of math is problem-solving, making connections, and figuring things out.

Classroom Rules and Expectations

  • No food in class. We have a rodent problem in this school, and we are serious about getting it under control. NO FOOD IN CLASS. Drinks such as water and black coffee are fine. Sugary drinks like coke or powerade are NOT acceptable. (Yes, the mice will come out and lick the carpet if there's sugar on it. Seriously. No sugary drinks!)
  • Phones and headphones are a distraction. It's easy to go to your phone when you feel frustrated or bored. We need to learn how to deal with challenges without being tempted to give up. Therefore, I have a NO PHONES and NO HEADHPONES policy in this classroom. If you take your phone out during class, or put in your headphones (whether they're plugged in or not) I will take the phone/headphone.
    • First offense: I keep your phone until the end of class.
    • Second offense: I keep your phone until the end of the day.
    • Third offense and beyond: I take your phone to students services, and your parents have to pick it up.
  • Hall Passes
    • You need to be in class in order to learn. You shouldn't need to use the pass in my class period more than once a week or so. If you have a medical condition that requires that you use the pass more often, please provide a doctor's note.
    • No passes in the first or last ten minutes of class.
    • Hall passes are for the bathroom, drinking fountain, and locker ONLY. If you need to go to the bookkeeper, main office, student services, etc., let me know and I may write you a paper pass.
