Last week you delved into some local history. This week I would like you to go into more depth and create a quick presentation on some aspect of BC history. Put it together with some visuals and some information in point form. I would suggest google slides or powerpoint, but just save in a format able to be viewed by my PC. The assignment itself is in the Documents section. Find some aspect of our history that intrigues you and run with it.
Due on June 12th, 2020
Now that you have some background on the peoples that inhabited this area for centuries, we will look at the more recent local history. In the Documents section is part one of the Local History assignment for you to work on this week. Spend some time looking through the websites and finding some very cool facts. For example, how did Gastown get it's name? Who taught everyone to swim in early Vancouver? Have a look and email your facts to me by the end of the week.
Due June 5th, 2020
Vancouver itself has a very interesting history. For many centuries the area has been the home of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh people. This week I would like you to do some background research on the original inhabitants of this area. Collect 7 interesting facts, in point form, about one or all of the Indigenous people of what is now Vancouver. The best place to start is the Squamish people on this page:
And maybe check out this video:
And peruse this website:
Due May 29th, 2020
We continue our look at Canadian history with a stop in British Columbia. BC joined Canada for a number of reasons, but it was not pre-destined that BC would be part of Canada. There were competing interests for this rich and diverse part of the world. I would like to do a straightforward worksheet this week. Download Chapter 6 from the textbook in documents and the worksheet titled The Oregon Territory. Complete the worksheet and send it in to me by the end of the week.
There are some topics that really are important and deserve to have some long discussions in class. The history of "Indian" Residential Schools in Canada is one of those topics. Because we are unable to meet at this time I want to at least make sure that you have some understanding of Residential Schools and the impact that they had on Indigenous children at the time and on Indigenous communities and the nation of Canada today. Residential Schools were established by the Canadian government in the 1800's and the last schools were closed not that long ago. Indigenous children were forced from their families and sent away to schools run by various religious organizations.
In the Documents section I have posted an assignment. Read through the pages and answer the questions. The assignment is due on Thursday, May 7th.
Hello Grade 9's! I hope that you are doing well and are able to focus some of your time towards school and maybe try some baking. Cookies are delicious.
I have received homework assignments from many of you, so thanks for handing those in. I am worried that many of you are feeling overwhelmed with school work. So for the last assignment of the week all I am asking is that you send your answers from the April 27th lesson below, in to me. If you haven't already done them then please take the time to watch the videos and do a little bit of reading. I would like the questions in to me by the end of the day on Friday, May 1st.
I understand that this can all be a bit much, but I would love it if you could show me that you are still with the program and it lets me know that you are doing alright. Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns.
Take care
Mr. G
Be sure to hand in your Confederation paragraph from last week.
For the start of the first lesson this week, please search on Youtube: Ray Mears Northern Wilderness S01E02
Next, Download Chapter 5: Changes Come to the Prairies
Now that you have some background on Confederation (see assignment below), use your knowledge to write a multi-paragraph written response on the question:
Read the question carefully, brainstorm on the topic using the assignment from last week (below), and for those people looking for a higher level on this assignment, do some research on the factors that forced/pushed the four original provinces into the country called Canada.
May the Force be with you. (the force of the factors that pushed colonies into Confederation, that is) (plus I'm getting a head start on those ridiculous May the 4th jokes that are coming in a couple of weeks.
Read pages 100 to 104 of the digital textbook found in the documents section.
