This week we are going to look at Hurricanes/Typhoons/Cyclones. They are all the same thing: giant swirly storms of destruction. First, let's look at the difference between other swirly storms of destruction:
Now a quick look at hurricanes themselves and what drives them:
Spend some time viewing this video which gives a more in-depth look at the phenomenon:
For this week, I would like you to research 8 facts on the most destructive Hurricanes/Typhoons/Cyclones in recorded history. What was it that caused the most destruction and what can be done to avoid destruction in the future?
Due Friday, June, 12th.
Hello Geography folks! Thanks so much for the tornado poems. They really are great. I am still hoping to get some more assignments for last week, so this week I won't introduce a significant assignment but give you a little time to catch up on you Geography if you haven't completed the assignment below, or some of your other classes. We are moving on to hurricanes next week so keep an eye on the news this week as a Cyclone is hitting India this week. All that I would like you to do is watch/read/absorb some news on a hurricane/Typhoon/Cyclone and give me 5 facts in a quick email. All the best and thanks for staying involved in class.
Mr. G
Last week a tornado struck Vancouver Island! This is incredibly rare. Tornadoes are usually found in the centre of North America, when certain conditions occur. This week I would like you to look into the phenomenon of tornadoes. Let's start with a good overview of how tornadoes form:
And another video on formation:
And some crazy video on tornadoes themselves and what they look like:
And "we got cow":
Once this is done, create an Acrostic poem using the word TORNADOES!!! Yes, that's right. An Acrostic poem. Why not!
Due on May 29th, 2020
Keep those assignments coming in. They are looking great. We are going to have a look at weather this week. If there is one topic that most Canadians can be counted on to discuss in small talk, it's the weather. (And also CoVid, but that's relatively recent) A better understanding of the weather will serve you well in your future of dinner conversations, and discussions with people while standing in line. First, a video about the wind:
Thanks for getting your climate organizers in to me. If you haven't handed it in, there is still plenty of time.
For this week's assignment I would like you to use those organizers to discuss the influences to the climate that we face in North Vancouver. Take some time to study your organizer and figure out the factors that would affect us, and explain HOW this would occur. You can do this in a paragraph or in point form, but the important part is in making the connection between the climatic factor and the climate of North Vancouver. Use as many factors as possible and send it all to me by the end of the week. Due the morning of Friday, May 15th.
Welcome to the week. There are two things to deal with at the start of this week
The Organizer is due on May 6th, at the end of the day. Again, do your best at giving a good effort, and I will be extraordinarily kind and gentle.
Hello everyone. Thanks for all of the Geography and Me assignments that have been handed in. They were great and I enjoyed seeing them. (I have sent back messages and marks to all those that have handed in them in.) That being said, there are still a number of you who need to get the work in to me. Please take the time today and tomorrow to work on your Geo and Me and send it in, and to work on your Climate organizer. I will post info on the last section of the organizer over the weekend so that you can finish it at the start of next week.
I really hope that you are all doing well. Try not to stress about school stuff too much. Keep working at it and do your best. Let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
Mr. G
Now that you have completed and emailed my your Geography and Me assignment, we are going to complete our unit on the factors that influence climate. We have already taken a look at Global Winds and Ocean Currents in class. Next, we are going to look at Water bodies, Mountains, and Continents.
I would like you to start an organizer that will contain pictures and text that describe the factors that affect climate. (I will post the assignment in the 'Docs' section) The first three sections have already been covering in class and should be in your notes. If not, you will have to look them up. Complete a graphic organizer with pictures and text that describe the big ideas for each section. I don't need you to give me every little tiny detail, I want the big ideas. (4-6 big ideas per section, with 1 or 2 graphics)
You can use any format that you like as long as you can email a digital copy or a photo of your work in a PC friendly format.
Hello Geographizers!
