IB Music Seminar (8MUS02)

This course (one year for SL students; two years for HL students) is for students who desire to complete an IB certificate or use IB Music as a Higher Level elective course for their IB diploma. HL students will commit to two years and SL students will commit to one year of the weekly afternoon seminar sessions to learn the rubrics of IB Music. In addition to the performance requirements of the class work, the music seminar will focus on aspects of music history, music theory, and music analysis. Class will take place each Tuesday after school in room 2529 from 3:15 to 5:15 pm.

Fine Art Credit, Full Year/1.0 Credit, IB Course, Grade 11 - 12

This year-long course is for students who desire to complete an IB certificate or use IB Music as their elective course work for their IB diploma. Students will commit to a weekly afternoon seminar session to learn the curriculum and rubrics of IB Music. The music seminar will also focus on aspects of music history, theory and analysis. Students must also be members of a yearlong music performance ensemble.

Learning Requirements: In addition to attending their daily Music Ensemble Performance Class, students will attend the Tuesday after school 2 hour seminars, September through May.

Content:

  • The history of music throughout the world.

Strategies: Students will learn through a combination of:

  • research based papers
  • multi-media presentations
  • music listening and analysis
  • direct instruction
  • music ensemble performance/evaluation

Equipment to be provided by student: Head-set (ear buds)

Fee: Students will be responsible for the cost of outfit and field trips for their particular ensembles. IB exam fee will apply as appropriate.

IB Music SLC - Composition and Creation (MUS666)

Fine Art Credit, Full Year/1.0 Credit, IB Course, Grade 11 - 12

This course will familiarize students with music composition techniques and music notation and recording technology. Students will be introduced to music composition and arranging techniques from many diverse genres and time periods and their application to making electronic and acoustic compositions and recordings. Students will investigate and analysis music from different time periods from around the world. Students taking this class must also take IB Music 8th period seminar class, which meets after school on Tuesdays, September through May. The IB seminar teaches students the theory, music history and listening skills they will need to be successful on the IB exam.

The recommended sequence of classes to prepare for IB Music -- Composition and Creation is as follows:

  • Grade 9 or 10, Take Songwriting and Sequencing (1 semester in length.)
  • Grade 11 or 12, Take IB Composition and Creation (1 semester in length) along with the 7th period IB Music Seminar which meets one day a week after school.

Content:

  • COMPOSING: The creation of musical works through the manipulation of musical elements.
  • ARRANGING: The process of drawing on music that is already in existence and manipulating it.
  • IMPROVISING: Spontaneous musical expression in response to a musical or non-musical stimulus.
  • STYLISTIC TECHNIQUES: The study of the compositional styles of others.

Strategies: Students will develop creative skills through the exploration, control, and use of musical elements. These elements include:

  • Beat and Rhythm
  • Pitch and Melody
  • Harmony, Texture, and Timbre/Tone Color
  • Form
  • Expression: Dynamics, Style, Tempo, Phrasing
  • Stylistic Techniques from around the World

Equipment to be provided by student: Ear buds or IPod style headphones and a USB drive for holding arrangements, scores and reflections.

Fee: IB exam fee will apply as appropriate.

IB Music HL (MUS659)

Fine Art Credit, Full Year/1.0 Credit (for 2 years), IB Course, Grades 11 through 12

This two- year-long course is for students who desire to complete an IB certificate or use IB Music as a Higher Level elective course for their IB diploma. Students will commit to two years of the weekly afternoon seminar sessions to learn the curriculum and rubrics of IB Music. The after school seminar will focus on aspects of music history, theory, and music analysis.

The additional requirements of Music HL are:

  • Students will submit solo recital recordings on their specialty instruments or voice.
  • Students will complete and submit 3 music compositions or creations.

Learning Requirements: Students need to be enrolled in either an ensemble class (choir, orchestra, or band), OR have taken or are currently enrolled in the Songwriting & Sequencing and the IB Composition & Creation classes. Students will need proficiency on an instrument or voice in order to complete the solo recital component per the IB diploma requirements for HL Music. Students may also be enrolled through teacher recommendation. In addition to the daily Music Performance or composition class, students will attend the Tuesday after school 2 hour seminars, September through May. For HL students, this will be a two-year seminar commitment.

  • ARRANGING: The process of drawing on music that is already in existence and manipulating it.
  • IMPROVISING: Spontaneous musical expression in response to a musical or non-musical stimulus.
  • STYLISTIC TECHNIQUES: The study of the compositional styles of others.
  • ANALYSIS: The study of music from cultures around the world as well as Western Arts music.

Strategies: Students will learn through a combination of: research based papers and multi-media presentations, music listening and analysis, direct instruction, music ensemble performance/evaluations, solo instrument/voice studies, and recordings.

Students will develop creative skills through the exploration, control, and use of musical elements. Students will use their knowledge of these elements of music to complete a music creation portfolio.

Students’ grades will be determined by the independent score given to their portfolio by the International Baccalaureate Foundation assessors or as determined by the instructor.
