Finding Your Place in the World of Mathematics
Theresa Laurent, Ph.D.
Professor of Mathematics & Chair of Basic Sciences
University of Health Sciences & Pharmacy, St. Louis, MO
Abstract:
Aspiring to make significant contributions in mathematics research and teaching can be a daunting task. Whether we are motivated by the impacts made by our research mentors or inspired by our favorite teachers, we are often tempted to emulate them. Instead, however, I will challenge us to identify how we are different. What are our unique strengths, passions, and experiences that will help us make the mathematics world a better place? Together we will explore the impacts made by some lesser known mathematicians and educators to inspire us on our journey to find a unique place for each of us in the world of mathematics.
10:00am – 11:00am CT
An Active Approach to Active Learning
Jennifer Quinn, Ph.D.
Professor of Mathematics
University of Washington Tacoma
President-elect, Mathematical Association of America
Abstract:
In its opening manifesto, the MAA Instructional Practice Guide states that “effective teaching and deep learning require student engagement with content both inside and outside the classroom” and calls for a “community-wide transformation toward improved learning experiences and equitable access to mathematics for all students.” In this workshop you will actively experience some (remotely reinterpreted) teaching tools while building a supportive and trusting community of practice.
