Missouri Section NExT Meeting Fall 2019
Our 2019 Fall Missouri Section NExT Meeting will be Friday October 4 from 3:30-5 at UMKC. Our speaker is David Clark from Grand Valley State University. The title and abstract of his talk follow.
Title: A quick introduction to mastery grading
Abstract: Do you teach students who struggle initially, eventually come to learn new ideas deeply -- but are doomed by early grades weighing them down? Do you worry that a student could pass your class by earning partial credit, without ever solving a problem fully correctly? Do you want to incorporate higher-order skills into grades in a more meaningful way? Mastery grading is an approach to assessment that is based on the idea that students' final grades should be based on eventual mastery of clear learning objectives. Mastery graded classes do not involve collecting points or partial credit. In this hands-on workshop, participants will see how mastery grading works, start thinking about how to convert their own classes to use mastery grading, and learn about resources to help them keep going with mastery grading.
