About

This website was one of many projects that I had in the back of my mind for the longest time. And I take a lot of pride in how it turned out. I hope you find it an informative and educational website.

I have had an interest in this project since the monument first fell in 1978. It was during a time when I used to collect old newspapers. And I'd clip newer newspaper articles of things that interested me at the time. The fall of the monument was a big event back then. What furthered my interest in this was my relationship with the Robare's. My mother worked with Carl Robare's wife. And I was able to see, first hand, the Soldier in Mr. Robare's garage.

I moved out of the area around 1989. And when I returned, in 2003, I'd drive past the monument almost every day. And it conjured up some old feelings and concerns.

I came up with the idea of compiling a booklet about the monument to donate to the local library. Whilst involved with some other projects on the internet, I came to the realization that maybe a website would be better. It would certainly reach more eyes! So...the trick was coordinating all that I know and have with all that I needed to know--and I found I didn't know enough. So, through more research, and meeting with Mr. Robare, I gathered enough information to offer the citizens of North Adams a hearty background on their one and only monument.

I hope you find this website informative and educational.

Thrive!
