Basics about Reflexology

FEATURED BOOK

MED SPA

by Dr. Amy Holland

Reflexology is an alternative holistic therapy. It comes with a long history. In a tomb located in Saqqara Egypt. The inscriptions on the wall of the physician's tomb seem to indicate that some form of reflexology was being used at that time. It is believed that Zone Therapy was the precursor to the form of reflexology that was designed by Dr. William H. Fitzgerald.

The basic premise of reflexology is that there are point on the hands, feet and ears that correlate with organs and other areas of the body. For example, if you are having a problem with your liver there are places on your hands and feet where pressure can be placed to help ease tension and help the performance of the organ. A practitioner learns how much pressure to apply and techniques for comfort.

There are several theories as to why people seem to have some great success with reflexology. One of the ideas is that the lymphatic system, which runs through the entire body, responds to the pressure and brings balance back to the system. Since the lymphatic systems affects all other systems the pressure could possibly bring alignment. A regular foot or hand massage probably does not accomplish the same thing as the pressure levels are different.

Another theory is that the experience is simply so comfortable and relaxing that stress is reduced with each session, giving the body the time it needs to heal itself. There is probably a little truth in that theory if you completely accept one of the other options.

Perhaps it is simple the placebo effect. It works because people believe it works. And yet again, it may be that everything the reflexology claims is true. There is no way to disprove it either.

A typical session lasts between 30 to 60 minutes. It almost always includes the feet, hands and sometimes the ears. The client is able to stay dressed, just removing the shoes and socks. The process should not be painful. There may be some tender spots, but it should not hurt. People with ticklish feet are often worried, but the pressure used doesn't bother most.

Some reflexologist with use scented creams as well to enhance the session. If you are sensitive to any scents it is good to let them know ahead of time. A session can be anywhere from $30.00 to $90.00. You can shop around for the lowest rates. Some will come to your home. The service is often available on spa menus.

The American Reflexology Certification Board is the group that is responsible for certification in the United States. While some states have some specific regulations all of them recognize this certification. It is completely acceptable to ask if your reflexologist is certified.

It may not be the perfect solution for everyone, but many have found it be a helpful part of a healthy routine. It is certainly worth trying when traditional methods are not what you are looking for. As part of a healthy lifestyle there are benefits.
