The term Zen is derived from the Japanese pronunciation of the Middle Chinese word 禪 (chán), an abbreviation of 禪那 (chánnà). This is the Chinese transliteration of the Sanskrit word of dhyāna. or "absorption" or "meditative state". Dhyāna is an important concept in Buddhism. Zen Buddhism had its origins in China during the Tang dynasty.
Zen is composed of meditation-practice, insight into the nature of mind and nature of things. The personal expression of this insight is translated into daily life, especially for the benefit of others. It emphasizes understanding through spiritual practice.
