KNITTING FOR CHARITY

Local Charities that MMKG members can knit for:
Sparrow Hospital will accept:
Hats for Chemo patients (all ages and sizes, very soft and washable)
Baby items (extra small preemie to newborn, soft and washable- no embellishments, please)
Warm hats/mittens/gloves/scarves for Emergency Room patients needing warm clothes
Haslett Public Schools will accept:
Hats (mittens) for children in Pre-School, Elementary, and Middle School (whatever size/material/color/design you wish, washable is preferred - please label anything that cannot be machine washed). We make these in return for the use of the meeting space at the Haslett
Administration Building.
Sticks and Strings will accept:
Lap robes for Hospice (washable/adult size, crocheted/ knitted/ quilted/etc.) We would like to make rectangles (7"x9" from worsted weight yarns) and squares (8"- from DK weight yarn) between now and the last meeting of the year when we will sew them together into lap robes. Teddy bears for the Lansing Police Department (washable, no buttons – please)

Local Animal Shelters will accept:
Pet blankets for dogs and cats (must be washable, made of worsted weight yarn used double or bulky yarn: sizes include 13x16", 17x17", 14x20", up to 20/28”. A good pattern that goes from corner to corner is "Cage Cozy" by Vicki Mikulak (Ravelry).

Knitted Knockers (to be discussed as a new charity option)
We are not sure yet if this is something Sparrow will want; if not, there is a group in the Detroit area that distributes them. Patterns for Knitted Knockers: www. knittedknockersusa.com (multiple cup sizes using straight or circular needles)

Other Charities that you may wish to pursue independently:
Mittens for Detroit accepts mittens and gloves for 12 charities in the Detroit area.
Knit a Square accepts 8" squares that are knit or crocheted which are sent to Africa.
Wool Aid accepts woolen items for children ages 8-16; they are located in Belleville, IL.

2017/2018 Knitting Collection Schedule:
Sept. 19 - Please bring in any charity projects you have completed over the summer
Oct. 17 - Kit for lap robes will be ready to pick up
Nov. 21 - Newborn caps for Sparrow's NICU
Dec. 19 - Hats and mittens for Haslett Public Schools
Jan. 17 - Cold weather items (hats, scarves, mittens, etc.) for Sparrow ER
Feb. 20 - Chemo caps (made with soft yarn, for all ages, both male and female) for Sparrow's Cancer Center
Mar. 20 - Pet mats
Apr. 17 - Please bring in all the charity projects you've finished, regardless of what category
May 15 – Lap robe assembly
These are target dates; with the exception of the Haslett Public Schools donation, we will continue to collect items and deliver them to Sparrow periodically when a sufficient quantity has been amassed.
