At January's Guild meeting, a number of opportunities for charity knitting were discussed.
Seventy-five hats and a handful of mittens (ha!) were donated last month to the Haslett Public Schools system. We've received thank yous from Wilkshire Early Childhood Center (Kindergarten and first grade), Ralya Elementary and Murphy Elementary (grades 2-5), signed by the principals and by a number of the kids who received our hand knit items. If that doesn't give you a warm, fuzzy feeling (ha! again!), nothing will.
Chemo caps were collected this month, which will be taken to Knit Michigan in Bloomfield Hills on Saturday, February 6, 2010. There is at least one carload of Guild members going -- won't you join us? Details can be found at http://www.knitmichigan.com/.
Due at February's meeting are sweaters, vests, and socks for children aged 7-14, which Sarah will personally deliver to the afghans for Afghans organization in California the following week. Please read the guidelines for this campaign here: http://www.afghansforafghans.org/youthcampaign.html.
Comfort Bears is a new, local group created to provide stuffed bears to the Lansing Michigan Police Department, to have on hand when they encounter kids in traumatic situations. The local yarn shops are all on board to act as drop off points, with pick ups scheduled in 2010 for June 12 and December 11. This will be an ongoing project! For more details, contact Kristi at lansingcomfortbears@gmail.com, or visit the "Lansing Comfort Bear Project" Ravelry group. Links to patterns for stuffed bears will be provided below.
No matter what you're knitting, or who you're knitting it for (as long as it's someone else!), please join us at Knitting for Others in the cafe at the Eastwood Schulers on Sunday, January 24 from noon to 4. Sarah will have tags on hand to attach to any chemo caps which are headed to Knit Michigan. Hope to see you there!
