Beaches

There are many beaches around Luquillo, including the world famous Luquillo Beach.  Here is some more information.

The beaches in Puerto Rico are all open to the public, one cannot “own” the beach front.  Within a short walk from the house there are several choices for beaches, each with different characteristics.  In front of the house is a beach perfect for floating on “noodles” (there is a large supply of them at the house), having a beverage, and enjoying the cool water.  There is also snorkeling on the reef not far out.  The latest hurricane destroyed most of the live coral, but it is coming back and there is an abundance of fish.  It is not the best snorkeling in the world, but it is fun and entertaining, especially for the beginners.  There is a book in the house on snorkeling and diving in Puerto Rico that can guide the passionate ones to other possibilities.   To the right, as you look out at the ocean, down towards Luquillo, is La Pared, one of the better surfing beaches in the Caribbean.  You can often observe the surfers riding the large waves.  The surf shop offers surf boards and instruction.  If you haven’t tried it, it is tougher than it looks!   To the left, around the point is a great beach for body surfing, boogie boarding and wave jumping.  There are times that the waves can be quite challenging, so be fore-warned.  Head to the middle of the beach, in the shadows of the Playa Azul Condominiums for the best waves.  Luquillo Beach is a mile to the west, and it is a public beach.  It is beautiful, but can be crowded on the weekends, and there are no waves.  Here is some more information about beaches across the islands.
