If you're looking for some adventure and fun around Luquillo, here are some places to start.
El Yunque.com has information about many different activities in the northeast corner of the island, including hiking, snorkeling, sailing, kayaking, climbing, and more. In the national part itself, there are many places for adventure. Try hiking to waterfalls (Juan Diego and La Mina), swimming areas and mountain tops. For more information, check out the Nature Adventures brochure.
Aventuras Tierra Adentro - Cave excursions, rapelling, canyoning, rock climbing and body rafting in Puerto Rico
Surfing - There are two surf shops/rental shops for surfboards and boogie boards right in Luquillo - La Selva, in downtown Luquillo and the Boardriders Shop and Cafe, right in front of La Pared. La Selva rents boards by the day and Boardriders rents by the hour. Both have instructors and lessons available. Bob Roberts, a professional surf instructor, also offers lessons in Luquillo and is a favorite with our family.
Kayaking in the Bioluminescent Bay in Las Croabas/Fajardo - This is a definite must-do on a trip to Puerto Rico. The 5:30 trip is great, the kayak trip into the Laguna Grande takes place during daylight, so you can appreciate the mangrove swamps and iguanas.
Las Cabezas de San Juan Nature Reserve and Lighthouse - The Nature Reserve offers a wonderful 2-hour English tour at 2:00 Wednesday through Sunday. Call for reservations to explore the beaches, lighthouse and mangrove swamp.
Biking - There are some biking opportunities on the island. Here is additional information about biking on Vieques. Information about biking in Piñones, halfway between San Juan and Luquillo. Information about biking in El Yunque Rain Forest.
Scuba and Snorkeling - There are many excellent scuba dive sites around Luquillo. Recently, a guest visited the Sea Ventures Dive Center in Fajardo for a two-dive day of adventure, including a sighting of a dolphin.
