January 2013

It was a cold night in Meriden, and we only got a location late in the month, but it was a good turnout. Thank you Davis for allowing us to invade the open apartment you had. This is our second meeting at someone's home (or at least not a public place that has a closing hour). Again, it went much later than usual, all a testament to this great group of guys who all have a lot to share. And every one brought more than one beer!
It has become clear that having this monthly gathering of like minded folks who are looking to improve their craft has also inspired a greater amount of brewing. Now we are beginning to plan some experiments to really get to the heart of great brewing.
This coming year, we are going to plan some SMASH (Single Malt And Single Hop) Brewing. This will really enhance our understanding of the impact of Malt, Hops and Yeast. When we have a good base wort, we can also add other single ingredients to really pick out how it impacts the finished product. I know this will help me design more and better beer in the next year.
If this sounds exciting at all to you, or you have other ideas, please come to the next meeting and share you r ideas. If you have a friend who has "always wanted to try brewing" drag them along and we can get them started. 2013 is going to be a great year!
