Rebecca Brewer

Troy High School 

Rebecca Brewer is a national award-winning biology educator in Troy, Michigan, and coauthor of the high school biology textbook Biology Now. She has developed educational resources for BSCS, the National Center for Science Education, the Fred Hutch Cancer Center, The Curie Society, PBS NewsHour Extra, and Science Friday. Rebecca is a teacher consultant for MiniOne Systems, a teacher ambassador for the National Center for Science Education (NCSE) and the Teacher Institute for Evolutionary Science (TIES), and was on the ConnectedBio team - an NSF-funded collaboration between Concord Consortium and Michigan State University. She also serves as Michigan's Outstanding Biology Teacher Award Director for the National Association of Biology Teachers. 

Mark Eberhard

St. Clair High School

Mark is in his 38th year of teaching AP Biology, Environmental Science, and Anatomy & Physiology at St. Clair High School in the East China School District.  Mark earned his B.S. in biological science from Michigan State University and an M.A, in theatre from the Chicago School for the Performing Arts at Roosevelt University.  He has also earned over 60 graduate credits in biology from both Michigan State University and Wayne State University.   Mark is an Ambassador for HHMI Biointeractive, a Model Teacher for 3DMD, and a past member of the Pre-AP Biology writing team for the College Board.   In addition to his classroom responsibilities, Mark coached football, wrestling, and baseball for over 15 years.  For the past 28 years he has been the director of St. Clair High theatre program and for the past 35 years he has been the director of St. Clair's nationally and state recognized student leadership program. Mark has been a presenter many times at regional and state science conferences and student leadership conferences.  Mark's work in and out of the classroom has been recognized with multiple awards throughout the years. Most recently, Mark was awarded the Outstanding Biology Teacher Award for Michigan in 2020.   

Wendy Johnson

Kentwood High School 

Wendy Johnson currently serves as the Science Education Specialist for the National Center for Science Education (NCSE).  She was a teacher leader in the AP Biology Leadership Academy sponsored by the National Association of Biology Teachers and BSCS Science Learning. Wendy received the Michigan Outstanding Biology Teacher Award (2020) from the National Association of Biology Teachers. Her work has been published in multiple education journals and teacher resources. Wendy was the lead author on a book chapter addressing effective teaching and learning about climate change. She earned her BA in Biology Education from Hope College, an MS in Biological Sciences from Michigan State University, and a dual PhD in Curriculum & Instruction and Ecology & Evolutionary Biology also from MSU.

Heather Peterson

Holt High School 

Heather is in her 32nd year of teaching biology, botany and AP Biology at Holt High School, a suburb of Lansing, MI. Heather earned her B.S. in Lyman Briggs Biology, Mathematics and Secondary Education from Michigan State University in 1992. In 1997, Heather earned her M.S. in Biological Sciences also from Michigan State University (Go Green!). Heather has taught at both Lansing Community College and Michigan State University over her career as well. In addition to teaching through an inquiry, case-study approach at Holt, Heather is the head science olympiad coach for 30 years now and Holt High School has advanced to the State Tournament in 40 of the 41 years of Science Olympiad. In 2012, Heather was honored with the Outstanding Biology Teacher Award through the National Association of Biology Teachers (NABT) and she has been a finalist for the PAEMST (Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching) in both 2015 and 2021. Most recently Heather has become part of the HHMI Biointeractive Ambassador Community where she presents at state and national conferences her adaptations of HHMI Biointeractive FREE resources. She has mentored several pre-service teachers and encourages all to help build our next generation of teachers. Heather Peterson lives in Dimondale, MI with her supportive husband of 25 years, David, her 2 young adult sons and her high school senior daughter in addition to various pets such as a dog, lizard, snake and hissing cockroaches. Biology is life.
