Supplies

• Food: I leave food out for them all day so they might eat a little more or a little less each day
  • Tiki Cat (they go through a can a day as a "topping" on their regular food)
  • Friskies Special Diet Turkey and Giblets (they go through about 2 to 4 cans a day)
  • Merrick’s Grammy’s Pot Pie (use only if he’s running lower numbers – see below)
• Bottled water (the ratio is about a half can of water to every full can of Friskies)
  • Freeze-dried Turkey or Chicken (use as many as you need to)
  • Freeze-dried Shrimp (use as a last resort)
• Insulin: Lantus SoloSTAR Pen
  • Dosage: 2.5u Lantus, twice a day
  • Make sure the next shot is 12 hours from the last, ±30 minutes (it's better to be late than too early)
• Syringes: Whichever is easiest for you to use
  • 3/10 mL, 29 gauge, 12.7 mm length
  • 3/10 mL, 31 gauge, 8 mm length
• Glucometers:
  • ReliOn Micro (with test strips): Easier to use, requires less blood
  • ReliOn Prime (with test strips): More accurate on lower numbers (see below)
• Hypo Toolkit with instructions
• Credit Card in case of Vet Emergency

Guidelines

1. Test BG before every shot. Try to get some mid-cycle tests, if possible (see schedule below). If he is acting weird or seems off, test him then as well
2. If he is below 150 at pre-shot, text and/or call me before giving a shot
3. If he is below 70 at any time, feed him some regular food and test again in an hour
4. If he is below 60 at any time, retest with Prime
5. If he is below 60 on Prime at any time, feed him some Grammy’s Pot Pie and test again in a half hour
6. If he is below 50 on Prime at any time, feed him some Grammy’s Pot Pie mixed with a smidgen of honey and call me
7. If he is below 40 on Prime at any time, grab the hypo kit, rub some honey on his paws to lick off, and call me immediately
8. If he is UNRESPONSIVE, rub karo syrup or honey on his gums, grab the credit card and ER vet info, and take him immediately to the vet. Then call me.

General Schedule

7am Take Michelangelo’s AMPS test

½ can of Friskies SD each plus a little Tiki on top. Mix with ½ can of water

Give Michelangelo his AM shot – 2.5u Lantus

11 am – 3 pm Try to grab a test within this range each day, if possible

¼ to ½ can of Friskies SD each plus a little Tiki on top. Mix with water

7 pm Take Michelangelo’s PMPS test

½ can of Friskies SD each plus a little Tiki on top. Mix with ½ can of water

Give Michelangelo his PM shot – 2.5u Lantus

11 pm – on Before Bed test, if possible

¼ to ½ can of Friskies SD each plus the remaining Tiki on top. Mix with water

Make sure Henry is in the house for the night (this is when you might have to use the shrimp)
