I am Professor of Behavioural Economics at the University of Birmingham, Department of Economics. I joined the Department of Economics in 2010 as a Lecturer and became a Senior Lecturer in 2012, a Reader in 2013 and a Professor in 2018. Before coming to Birmingham, I was part of the experimental centres at the University of York, EXEC (where I worked from 2008-2010) and the University of Nottingham, CeDEx (from where I obtained my PhD under the supervision of Robin Cubitt and Simon Gaechter).

My research interests lie in the area of behavioural and experimental economics. Recent research has focused on social preferences, on voluntary cooperation in the presence of free rider incentives, on expression of emotions and on coordination games. My work has been published in Games & Economic Behavior, Journal of Public Economics, European Economic Review, Journal of Economic Psychology, Experimental Economics, Theory and Decision, Southern Economic Journal, Journal of Behavioral and Experimental Economics and  Economics Letters.

I am also affiliated with CESifo (Munich).

I serve as Associate Editor for the European Economic Review and the Journal of Economic Behavior & Organization and Coordinating Editor for Theory and Decision. Since December 2020, I also joined the Editorial Board of The Leadership Quarterly.

4th Summer School  in Behavioral and Experimental Economics

We are pleased to announce the fourth Summer School in Experimental and Behavioral Economics to be held at Bratislava University of Economics and Business (EUBA) in Bratislava (Slovakia) from June 8 to June 11, 2027. The School will feature lectures by leading researchers in state-of-the-art topics in experimental and behavioral economics in addition to a research workshop. Throughout the School the students will be able to present their own research in poster sessions and receive feedback from leading faculty and fellow participants. This year, we also introduce a student paper competition, where three winning papers will be presented during the school’s research workshop.

The 4th Summer School in Experimental and Behavioral Economics is very privileged to feature lectures by leading figures such as  Vincent Crawford (Oxford University and University of California San Diego), Michalis Drouvelis (University of Birmingham), Nagore Iriberri (University of the Basque Country UPV/EHU), John List (University of Chicago) and Matthew Rabin (Harvard University). The goal of the School is to deepen attendants’ understanding and knowledge of recent advances in the field of Experimental and Behavioral Economics. The topics taught will cover a broad range of methodologies such as theory, laboratory and field experiments, as well as applications. The School will provide a unique environment where students can expand their knowledge on topical research issues and engage with leading figures in the field. Scholars who have been admitted to the School will be taught the following subjects:

• strategic thinking: theory and applications (Vincent Crawford)

• using experimental games to measure social preferences (Michalis Drouvelis)

• women in science and economics: representation, publishing and peer recognition (Nagore Iriberri)

• experimental economics: theory and practice (John List)

• behavioral models of preferences, beliefs and reference points (Matthew Rabin)

PHD STUDENT PAPER COMPETITION

This year, the Summer School introduces a PhD Student Paper Competition. The competition is open exclusively to PhD students. Only full papers will be considered; abstracts and extended abstracts are not eligible. If you wish to participate, please indicate this in the application form at the link below.

Applicants may also indicate in the application form whether they are interested in presenting their work in the Poster Session, the Research Workshop, or both.

Applicants accepted to the Summer School who express an interest in participating in the Student Paper Competition will be contacted separately and invited to submit their full paper at the end of March 2027. All submitted papers will be evaluated, and the three winners will be notified by the end of April 2027.

The winning papers will be presented during the Summer School's Research Workshop on Wednesday, 9 June 2027.

HOW TO APPLY

The Summer School invites applications from Ph.D and MSc students in Economics, Business, Psychology, Behavioral Science, Political Science and related fields from all over the world.
