There are various ‘modes’ that these images can be in, and you’ll need to adjust them until you can edit them
1. When you open an ai/eps file you’ll notice the image layer in the Layers panel is called Layer 0 (#6), you’ll need to adjust your jpeg/gif/png file until the layer is called this.
2. If the layer is called Index (#7), then you will need to go to Image -> Mode -> RGB Colour. The layer will now either be called Layer # or Background.
3. If the Layer is called Background (#8), then right click on the layer in the Layers Panel and select Layer From Background…
4. Now your image should be called Layer 0, you’ll notice that your image will now have a white background, this needs removing and can be the most time consuming part of making logos, depending on the quality of the logo you have.
5. To remove the background, select the Wand Tool (#9) and select the background, then press the DEL key and the background will be deleted. Depending on how clean the background is (one colour or many shades) you may need to change the Tolerance, I tend to use the values 1, 10 or 30. 1 or 10 if you have a large good quality image, 30 if you have a small poor quality image. Basically the higher the Tolerance value the more pixels of a different shade that will be selected. (A value of 1 will only select neighbouring pixels of that exact colour).
6. Now your image should look like this (#10), once you have fully removed the background. To make sure you have fully removed the background, select the square shape tool and create a square (or any shape) that fills the entire canvas, now select the shape in the Layers Panel and press Ctrl+[ this will make the shape the bottom layer and will now be underneath the image.
7. If you notice a white faded outline around the logo, this will need to be removed. You can remove the outline by using the laso tool to select around the logo and delete the unwanted background. Or you can add a border around the image.
8. To add a border, first select the Eyedropper (I) tool and select the border, (In this example you would click somewhere on the black border) this is so you now the exact RGB colour of the border, that should appear in the colour panel on the top right.
9. Right click on the layer in the layers panel and select Blending Options… (#11).
10. Now select Stroke and tick the box (#12), change the size of the Stroke to 1 pixel, and position inside. Next select the red colour box and in the box that appears type in the RGB colour for your border. Then click on the OK boxes, so you get back to your image.
11. Now we need to get Photoshop to save the stroke to the image. In the layers panel select the new layer icon (#13), now right click on either layer and select merge layers.
12. Finally we need to crop the image, to maximize the logo size, select the crop tool, and crop the canvas until each side of the canvas touches the logo (#14).
13. Now you just need to save the image, goto File -> Save For Web. (#3) In the dialog box that appears, (#4) select PNG-24, and tick the Interlaced and Transparency boxes. Now click Save and select somewhere easy to find to save your image. You may find it easier to set up an action file to do the saving, as it’ll be a lot quicker.
