Skepticism
Before you refer to any of these (or any Internet source) I'd recommend you first check out Michael Shermer of Skeptic Magazine and his Bullshit Detection Kit. His lecture to the TED Conference about junk science is also excellent: http://youtu.be/8T_jwq9ph8k
Of course too many students think all media is "bullshit" and are too skeptical for their own good. There is more and more useful information available to each of us today, if we know where to find it. Another large segment of my students seems to believe anything that seems persuasive on Youtube. Science is how we navigate this mess and Shermer is good at explaining the basics of both science and academia. Good solid journalism from the best sources can also help you make sense of the complexity of information in the world.
