Michael Reed is a father, husband, teacher, intellectual, humanist, surfer, hiker, reader, environmentalist, and a very amateur musician. After attending public schools in Providence, Rhode Island, he received his bachelor's degree in American History from Brown University in 1992 on a combination of merit and need-based scholarships. In 1993, after quitting a retail executive job in New York City that made his life miserable, he moved to California where he discovered geography, surfing, backpacking, environmentalism, and geography. He returned to school at Cabrillo Community College near Santa Cruz in 1995 to study geography. Success there led to a master’s degree in geography from San Diego State University in 1999. Since the fall of 2000, he has been teaching environmental, physical, and cultural geography at Glendale Community College where he holds the title of Associate Professor of Geography and serves as chair of the geography department. He continues to explore California and the West and has visited more than 27 countries and counting.
