Michael Glaveys GAA,LGFA, & ROUNDERS Club
The Michael Glavey G.A.A Club serves Ballinlough, Cloonfad, Granlahan, and the following families in Gorthaganny-Earley, Hurley, Gorman, Daly , & Morris. Michael Glavey’s is seen as one of Roscommon county’s traditional clubs, despite its rather late formation in 1956. The Club was formed in January 1956, in Gorthaganny, by Peadar Earley (RIP)
The Club’s first Title was the U-15 County Championship, back in 1963.The Michael Glaveys Club dominated the Intermediate ranks in the early seventies when it won the League in 1970,1971,and again in 1972, as well as been successful in the Intermediate Championship in 1970 and 1972.
Glaveys originally covered a large area taking in two Parishes- Loughglynn and Kiltullagh, but due to the vast geographical area, the Loughglynn Parish decided to form their own Club, Eire Óg in 1984. An official by-law was agreed at County Board in 1992, to cover off border areas between Parishes.
The official opening of the Peadar Earley Memorial Park, took place on Sunday May 18th 1986. The Club won the Intermediate and Championship in 1985. They managed to stay in Senior grade for 20 years. They reached their first Senior Final in 1996, but were beaten by Clann na nGael.
The Club’s Adult team were relegated in 2005 back to Intermediate ranks and in 2009, were relegated to Junior Championship. The Adult team gained promotion to the Intermediate League in 2011 and finished in a very credible third place in the Club’s first year back.
Michael Glavey’s have had a lot of success with both underage girl’s and boy’s teams over the last few years, so the future for the Club is very bright.
Famous Players - Over the years some wonderful players have pulled on the Michael Glavey jersey. Our most famous player has been Dermot Earley RIP, but many other players have represented their Club and County, both Men’s and Ladies, Underage and Senior, with distinction.
Famous Managers- In latter times, Paul Coggins- Granlahan native and ex Club player, ex Manager of the London Senior Team (2010-2015; 5 Year Tenure Complete). Another is Paul Earley a Gorthaganny native and Ex Club & County Roscommon Player & Australian Rules Player, Manager of the Irish International Rules Team (2012-2014)
For over fifty years, the Club have had many wonderful days of success and achievement, as well as some difficult days, where teams failed at the final hurdle or did not cross the first hurdle.
