Anu Raghunathan is currently a Chief Scientist at National Chemical Laboratory in Pune. She has been with the National Chemical Laboratory for the last 15 years and was working as a faculty in Infectious Diseases at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in NY, NY previously. Anu Raghunathan oversees a laboratory dedicated to metabolic inquiry and cellular engineering (MICE) for biological applications. Her lab uses systems approaches (both experimental and computational) to understand biological cell behavior and function. She works on applying these principles to understand drug/antibiotic resistance in cells and also manipulate cells to make desired products.

Transforming renewable resources like starch into value added chemicals like lactic acid and diacetyl in her doctoral thesis using microbial fermentation and enzymology was a start of a career in metabolic engineering at IIT Bombay. Working with pioneer in bio-ethanol production, Drs. Lonnie Ingram and James Preston, at the University of Florida and with Bernhard Palsson, a metabolic modeling and systems biology proponent at University of California at San Diego, developed a flair for incisive holistic/systemic thinking. Her previous work on genetic basis of adaptive evolution on suboptimal growth substrates was cited by NOVA as one of the top 10 advances in evolution of the previous decade.
