1st Vice President’s Message
November is Alzheimer’s Awareness month. In an NBC panel on the Today on 11/3, one panelist cited that we spend $200B/year on Alzheimer’s care, and, if left unchecked will spend 2.3T/year in 2050. Another statistic: 1 in 5 persons over 65 suffer from Alzheimer’s. If true, that’s about 38 members of our Club. Alzheimer’s caregivers are the heroes in this saga. In my family, 8 of the 9 of us are rallying around my sister, Janie, who spends most of her time caring for my 94+ year old Mom exhibiting Alzheimer’s symptoms. It runs in Mom’s family with 2 brothers diagnosed and 2 sisters having passed recently from complications of Alzheimer’s.
There is help for anyone who is involved in caring for Alzheimer’s: alz.org/care or the 24/7 Helpline, a free resource for reliable information and support, day or night, at 800-272-3900.
There is no cure for Alzheimer’s, which is definitively shown in MRIs by the placque-like substance, beta amyloid, in the brain. At 68, with my Alzheimer’s family history, I use Prevagen, an herbal supplement with clinically proven results in improving memory. Research has shown that the more we challenge ourselves with cognitive activities such as doing crossword puzzles, playing games such as Bridge, Scrabble, Chess, etc., the better chance we have in staving off the symptoms of Alzheimer’s. We all can learn from those who appear to have mastered aging without debilitating cognitive or physical decline, such as Dick Van Dyke. His advice: “Keep Moving”, the title of his new book. It’s available in Kindle, hardbound or CD.
It’s only 1.5 months until or Christmas Party. Please put 12/17 on your calendar and bring your checkbook to our November 19th meeting. The cost is $37 for members and $40 for non-members, a bargain for a wonderful dinner/dance at Dutchess Manor. Thanks to Cathy Golan for all of her efforts to make this a memorable affair.
Our entertainment on 11/19 will be: “2 Dukes and 1 Dutchess”
Ed McKenna, 1st Vice President

Many new links have been added to the "Best of the Hudson Valley" section, thanks to the material Mary has been putting out on the table at our meetings. If you click on one of the flyers below you will get a larger view of it or go to Event.
If you have something you would like posted (a Restaurant, a Show or other Entertainment, a Place of Interest, or an Event) please let us know. This can be used just like the bulletin board we had at each meeting for awhile and the info Mary puts on the table at our meetings.
