Meetings are held January through June and September through November at the Knights of Columbus on the 3rd Thursday of the month. Social Hour begins at 1:00 PM. The meeting begins at 2:00 PM. Following the brief meeting there is entertainment or a speaker from the community providing information about services and item of interested to retirees.
Our meeting in December is held on the 3rd Thursday of the month as a holiday luncheon, location is announced and publicized two months in advance. Meetings are not held in July and August.
For all who missed our March Meeting: We had a 1-time change of venue from our normal meeting place at St. Mary’s Knights of Columbus Hall on Rt 82, to St. Kateri Tekakwitha’s Community center within the LaGrangville Church. This was to accommodate the family and friends of Rob Kelly, a 43 year old Westchester policeman who passed unexpectedly. He was a fellow Knight from the LaGrange Council. I became aware of the need while on vacation on Monday, 3/16, in Naples, FL. We tried our best to contact as many of the members who regularly attend. We had almost 50 at our Meeting at St. Kateri. My apologies to anyone who was inconvenienced!
Our speaker Carl Heitmuller led a very lively interactive discussion on wildlife (both fish and land) within the Hudson Valley. He had numerous props, including a snapping turtle.
Lillian Derkach provided me with a small clipping on the dilatory effect of various Meds, such as Benadryl and Nitol in increasing one’s chance of being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. The article titled: “Meds linked to Alzheimer’s” is posted on this site. My maternal Aunts and Uncles, diagnosed with Alzheimer’s are taking Aricept. There’s a new Alzheimer’s drug advertised on TV, Namenda XR (http://www.namendaxr.com ), which is intended to be taken along with Aricept. If you, or your kith, have been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, you may wish to discuss Namenda XR with your doctor. Why am I focusing on Alzheimer’s? Because a new case is diagnosed every 67 seconds! Because 1 out 2 people aged 85 or older are diagnosed with it. And, because there is evidence that both diet, lifestyle and avoidance of certain substances, such as aluminum, can have a profound effect on our ability to avoid it!
There is very new information from the Mayo Clinic on Alzheimer’s in the article “Were we Getting Alzheimer’s Wrong?” For many years, a sticky brain substance, called beta amyloid, has been used in the diagnosis of Alzheimer’s. Now there is another, possibly more important substance, called Tau, which is providing Alzheimer’s diagnosticians with ammo on diagnosing the disease. What can we do to minimize the risk of Alzheimer’s: eat right, exercise, and get sufficient sleep! Please see the article “5 Ways to Lower yourRisk of Alzheimer’s”.
Next Month’s meeting also focuses on Alzheimer’s: Thursday, April 16h, “Alzheimer’s -- Could it be Type III Diabetes?”. I hope to see you then, for an interesting and informative discussion on the Subject. Bring a friend! Also please bring your checkbook, to sign up for upcoming trips and the June Luncheon!

Thank you from Family Promise of the Mid Hudson Valley.
Many new links have been added to the "Best of the Hudson Valley" section, thanks to the material Mary has been putting out on the table at our meetings. If you click on one of the flyers below you will get a larger view of it or go to Event.
If you have something you would like posted (a Restaurant, a Show or other Entertainment, a Place of Interest, or an Event) please let us know. This can be used just like the bulletin board we had at each meeting for awhile and the info Mary puts on the table at our meetings.
