Module 2 - Create the Problem Engagement

Create the Problem Engagement

Introduction

Now that you and your group have mapped out the problem and its connection to curriculum, your next step is to craft a problem narrative. This is typically called a "problem engagement" or "Meet the Problem." Whatever you call it, this is your students' first contact with the problem.

Craft a problem narrative that introduces students to the issues that will lead to curriculum objectives. This is called "Meet the Problem" or problem engagement. Below is an example that stays consistent with our "immigration" theme.

For some, creating a compelling narrative can be the toughest aspect of a PBL lesson. For that reason, some folks opt to use a video as a form of engagement. The problem with that is that a video may introduce a wide variety of perspectives, stakeholders that lie beyond the scope of your lesson. Of course, there's nothing to stop you from creating your own video or audio problem engagement. In fact, video or audio can be ideal.

Assignment 2.1: Crafting the Problem

In the wiki section, you will take the opportunity to craft a written narrative based on your curriculum map. Refine it until it reflects ONLY what you want to focus on for curricular purposes.
