Software

UCINET

This course relies on the UCINET for Windows software package (which includes NetDraw), as well as Microsoft Excel. We will use the software in almost every class, so you must bring your computer to class.

Windows only!

Please note that UCINET is Windows only. If you have a Mac, you will have to install Parallels (or other Windows emulator) and run UCINET within that. If you do not have Parallels, I will be happy to arrange for the school to get it for you.

In order to avoid wasting time on computer issues, please have UCINET installed and running on your computer before our first class meeting. After it is installed, please run this installation exercise to ensure things are set up properly. You may also want to check out this UCINET help page.

Note that I am likely to update the software as the semester goes along, so I may ask you to reinstall the software a few times to get the latest. The current version is 6.774, so make sure your version is at least as current as that. The software is free to all members of the University of Kentucky community. I will give you a lifetime registration code in class.

OTHER

I will also use Stata in the course, but you can probably just use whatever your favorite statistical package is. Excel will also be used. If you will be using Parallels, it might be necessary to have Excel installed there as well, even if you already have it on the Mac side (I’m not sure if this is true -- I’m not a Mac user).
