Safer Internet Day is on 7 February. This lesson for teenage learners addresses the topic of online safety in a motivating way, allowing students to discuss issues, share their opinions and ideas and then do some online activities to finish the lesson or as a homework task.

This lesson plan for teachers of teen and adult students at A2 level looks at the language of 'money'. The lesson aims to raise students' awareness of verbs which collocate with 'money', give them practice using them and promote learner autonomy by encouraging them to deduce the meaning of unknown lexis from context.

A personal brand is in a way synonymous with your professional reputation, with how other people see you as a representative of an idea, of an organisation, or of an activity. Building your own brand can lead to industry recognition, better contacts, higher job security in a world which keeps changing, and much more. We have lots of Christmas activities for younger learners on the site. This week we feature a lesson for very young learners where children practise Christmas words with flashcard activities and games, listen to and sing a Christmas song, then they make a Christmas card.
Teaching teens
This lesson plan for teenagers of all ages and adults uses a short, two-minute video to look at the concept of giving and receiving gifts at Christmas. The video focuses on shoppers at a shopping centre, or shopping mall, who are given a present but then told that it is not for them. Students will use creativity and analysis to predict unknown facts in addition to developing fluency and writing skills.
Teaching adults
Every year as Christmas approaches, thousands of charities launch appeals, asking for donations. Christmas is a time of giving and it is a time when many charities raise a large proportion of their total annual income. With so many charities to choose from how can we decide which one to donate to? In this activity learners will imagine the class has £100 to donate. They will work in groups to decide which of four charities they should give the money to.

This week's featured talk from the Teaching for Success online conference is Duncan Foord's 'How to get your team thinking'. The ideas in this talk can be applied in staff meetings, management meetings and any projects which involve a team working together. They will help your team to become more creative and to make better decisions.

Most teachers at some time in their career have to teach one to one classes. They find a very different, challenging and special learning context, with unique possibilities and unique problems. In this article we will look at what exactly makes these classes so different from teaching groups, identify the advantages and disadvantages of learning and teaching in this way, and review some possible approaches and techniques to help effective learning.

This week's featured talk from the Teaching for Success online conference is Edouard Creemers' and Renate Thummler Blum's 'CT and Technology as part of 21st Century Skills'. Edouard and Renate look at on-line learning, blended learning and flipping the classroom, in addition to discussing what a cultivated critical thinker is, how we can become critical thinkers ourselves and how to incorporate Critical Thinking in the teaching/learning process.

Join a free TESOL Electronic Village Online (EVO) course, opening on January 9th for those teaching in difficult circumstances in developing country contexts. The five-week experience - 'Classroom-based Research for Professional Development'- will provide a practical introduction to teacher-research, helping teachers to explore challenges by planning and carrying out small-scale classroom investigations. Registration starts on 1st January 2017.

Громадська організація «Центр розвитку курорту Сергіївка» разом
з Міжнародним дитячим мовним табором «Bereg - Camp», оголошує
конкурс на кращий урок з англійської мови, який став найбільш
ефективним по засвоєнню матеріалу, спрямованого на посилення та
розвиток навчання англійської мови.
Мета конкурсу «English Speaking»: дізнатися про кращі методики
проведення уроків англійської мови з використанням інтерактивних методик
навчання у роботі з учнями шкіл. З метою запровадження принципів
позитивного пізнання мови, розвитку у школярів стійкої зацікавленості до
вивчення англійської мови, як до засобу спішування та обміну інформацією.
Виховання та розвиток особистості за допомогою залучення до культури
англомовних країн.
До участі в конкурсі «English Speaking» запрошуються школярі 5- 11
класів, які опишуть найкращим урок з англійської мови, який став найбільш
ефективним по засвоєнню матеріалу.
Терміни проведення «English Speaking»: вересень - грудень 2016
року.
Реєстрація учасників та робіт здійснюється до 17.00год. - 01
грудня 2016 року на сайті www.konkurs.bereg-camp.org. Опис уроку
складати в довільній формі не більше ніж на двох сторінках друкованого
тексту (12 розмір шрифту на 1 інтервалі) українською або англійською
мовою. Розміщувати роботи на сайті - як прикріплений документ Word
(додатково можна додати презентації, таблиці, схеми, малюнки, фото, відео),
обов’язково вказувати тему уроку.
Термін оцінювання робіт триватиме з 01 до 15 грудня 2016 року. 22
грудня буде оголошений переможець.
Переможці конкурсу «English Speaking» отримають цінні призи, а
школи, в якій вони навчаються, отримають набір з 20 постерів для
оформлення кабінету англійської мови.
Всі учасники отримають буклети про діяльність Міжнародного
Дитячого Мовного Табору «Bereg - Camp» та сертифікати учасника
Конкурсу.

Seneca Ryan is the returning English Language Fellow assigned in Kyiv for the 2016-2017 academic year. During her time in Ukraine, she has been training pre-service and in-service teachers, directing the English Writing Center at Kyiv Mohyla Academy and conducting speaking clubs at the American Space, America House among her many duties. Seneca has also taught English in South Korea, Mexico and Germany and enjoys visiting her home state of California between teaching assignments.

Overview
In this webinar we will look at some of the more challenging tasks that students may encounter in the IELTS test and explore ways in which we can help students improve their understanding of what is required.

11 лютого на базі КНЗ "Черкаський обласний інститут післядипломної освіти педагогічних працівників Черкаської обласної ради" розпочався дводенний фестиваль знавців англійської мови English Fest.
English Fest став майданчиком для збереження кращих традицій та впровадження інновацій. Формат фесту - це не тільки конкурси, пісні та драматизація, це можливості для 150 школярів – учасників з усієї області, взяти участь та продемонструвати високий рівень англійської та акторської майстерності, розмаїття костюмів і декорацій. Для вчителів цей захід - розуміння ефективних шляхів формування навичок учнів 21 століття, а саме: творчості й інноваційності, критичного мислення та вміння вирішувати проблеми, комунікативності та співробітництва, лідерства та відповідальності.

Teachers need to understand what makes a good test but many teachers are unsure of the key concepts and specialised technical vocabulary associated with Assessment Literacy. This webinar will explain in everyday language what teachers need to know about key areas of test design. The presenters will also focus on how testing relates to the classroom, and how testing leads to effective teaching and learning.

Dr Evelina D. Galaczi
Evelina is a Principal Research Manager at Cambridge English, University of Cambridge. Her research focuses primarily on speaking assessment and the role of assessment to support learning. She regularly presents at international conferences and has published in academic forums, including Applied Linguistics, Language Assessment Quarterly, Assessment in Education, and the Studies in Language Assessment series (CUP).
Dr Nahal Khabbazbashi
Nahal holds a DPhil in Education from the University of Oxford. In her current role as Senior Research Manager at Cambridge English, she works on projects related to workplace exams, automated assessment of speaking, benchmarking and impact studies. Nahal has publications in Language Testing, Language Learning and Papers in Language Testing and Assessment. To develop speaking skills, teenage learners need to practise speaking a great deal and over an extended period of time. But real improvement requires more than just practice – it requires learners to expand their language abilities: grammar, lexis, pronunciation and so on. Chief amongst these is lexis – individual words, multi-word items, lexical chunks and fixed phrases – since most breakdowns in language production are caused by lack of access to the right word or phrase. In this webinar, Jeff Stranks will look at the relationship between lexical competence and spoken fluency, and suggest materials and activities that can be used to help learners increase their lexical range and thus become better and more confident conversationalists in English.
Jeff Stranks (BA, M.Phil. Linguistics) was Senior Tutor in ELT at Bell College Saffron Walden from 1981 to 1991, and then worked as an Academic Coordinator with Cultura Inglesa (Rio de Janeiro) between 1991 and 2001. He is an external assessor for the UCLES DELTA, and a moderator for the UCLES COTE scheme. He is now a freelance author. He is also co‑author with Puchta et al of English in Mind (2004), More! (2008), and THiNK.

Plagiarism is a major issue for teachers everywhere, and there aren’t a lot of resources available to help students develop the skills needed to avoid it. This session will include research on plagiarism and offer skill-based solutions.
Jeanne Lambert has 20 years of ESL classroom, teacher training, and materials writing experience. She has taught at Columbia University, City University of New York (CUNY), and The New School, specializing in academic writing and English for Academic Purposes. She has worked as an ESL Methods Practicum instructor and currently teaches academic writing at The New School. She is the series editor of Final Draft, an academic writing series by Cambridge University Press.

In this session, Tom Walton explores a few of the ways in which your learners can use their phones and computers to create and share things and, most importantly, learning English as they do so.
What you will learn
What you will get from the session are some simple, practical ideas that will get learners playing not with technology, but with language. As the ideas presented are simple, they come with few (if any) technological headaches.
Bio
Tom started out in language teaching back in 1979 in Barcelona, where he's lived and worked ever since. Some of his ideas for using smart devices that have worked best in language classrooms have appeared in the Tech Tools for Teachers series on onestopenglish. In addition, he posts ideas for things learners could do with technology on his blog and on Twitter.
When he's not sitting in front of a computer, Tom doodles and collects quotations, two hobbies he's exploited on another blog for Spanish teachers.
