Self Appraisal

Self-assessment is the process of looking at oneself and providing internal feedback in order to assess aspects that are important to one's identity. It is one of the motives that drive self-evaluation, along with self-verification and self-enhancement. People use self-assessment to enhance their certainty of their own self-knowledge. Generating and acting on internal feedback is a form of metacognition and self-regulation.

Performance appraisals and internal feedback stressing developmental feedback may be more helpful in identifying needed skills for further development. Being overly self critical may have a negative effect on self enhancing behaviors.

Engaging in self appraisal requires reflection as a form of cognitive monitoring and evaluation. We first examine how we addressed the learning task and what strategies we employed in the task to be successful. We use self knowledge and what we know about ourself as a learner to determine how we responded to the learning task.
