May 17, 2025 Membership Meeting
The Meeting was held at Jeff’s Catering in Brewer on May 17th.
Guest Speaker: Jody Bachelder
Maine librarian & author
Presentation: “Here First: Samoset and the Wawenock of Pemaquid, Maine”
Jody grew up on the Pemaquid Peninsula in Maine, where Samoset and the Wawenock people lived. Her interest in this story developed from the historical fact that Samoset was the first Indigenous person to make contact with the colonists at Plymouth Plantation—despite being from a tribe over 200 miles away. This led her to explore the intriguing question:
“What was Samoset doing in Plymouth?”
Jody worked for many years in the Hall-Dale school system in Farmingdale, Maine, first as an educational technician in the library and later as a librarian after earning her Master’s degree.
Her book, “Here First: Samoset and the Wawenock of Pemaquid, Maine”, was published by Down East Books in 2022.
