Fiber Art With Crocheted Border

My art quilts focus on themes encompassing nature and science that arise from my childhood experiences in the north woods and my career as a microbiologist. Finnish heritage drives my design sense and instills a reverence for my ancestors. To honor my connection with the past, I often embellish my art quilts with a variety of handwork techniques including ancient fiber looping, couching, and crochet. At the same time, I find it energizing to experiment with innovative techniques and to use old ideas in new ways. Adding crocheted edging to my pieces instead of binding results in a unique and custom finish. Some of the pieces that are finished with crocheting can also be used as table art and viewed horizontally.
