Patent application data

Data description

Patent data have been used extensively in research in the fields of management, strategy, entrepreneurship and innovation. Despite its flaws, patent-based indicators are considered robust measures for a variety of concepts. One potential flaw is simply that firms do not pursue patents for all inventions, and even when they file patent applications, not all applications are granted. In fact, about 50% of all patent applications filed with the USPTO fails (see statistics).

Until 2000, patent applications files with the USPTO remained undisclosed until a patent was granted. Since December 2000 (source), also patent applications filed with the USPTO have become public (a) 18 months after filing for application and (b) still in the application process or (c) earlier upon request by the applicant.
