MBTB's Favorite Books Through the Years

These are the books MBTB has recommended over the years. Most of them are “starred,” the highest accolade we give books, but books we liked but didn’t star are also on this list.*

Most of the canons of mystery are not on the list. Agatha Christie, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Dorothy Sayers, Nancy Drew, and The Hardy Boys are some of the names who don’t appear here, but they certainly were favorites of MBTB. One could say they all were starred books, since they were usually the stepping points to get us into reading mysteries!

What else is missing? To be honest, some of the starred and recommended titles have just slipped through the paperwork cracks. As we notice the omissions, we will add them. When a classic title is mentioned, it usually is because we wanted to draw attention to a re-issue.

Another point worth mentioning, especially for those of you who want to start at the beginning of a series, very often the recommended title is not the first. Be your own detective and find the chronological list for yourself. (The magnificent website, stopyourekillingme.com, can help.)

This list is divided into selections from the bookstore’s quirky sections. We will soon add the plain alphabetical list, but where’s the fun in that?

Some of the titles have links to blog reviews.

* For awhile, only Jill and Carolyn, the first two owners of the store, could award stars. The rest of the staff attached write-ups of their favorites to the starred list each year.
